Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 is here. Lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Almost as thin as the candybar flagship and has the same 200MP main camera. Plus, a 8-inch foldable screen and an 6.5-inch cover screen that's like a regular phone.

For many tasks, you don’t even need to flip open the large screen. And perhaps, that’s the strongest point of this new foldable upgrade from Samsung – you can get all the goodness of a foldable phone while enjoying the simplicity of a regular candybar model.

Well, almost, because you do need to pay for that privilege. In Singapore, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 costs a grand S$3,328 for the top-end model with 16GB memory and 1TB of storage, while the 12GB/512GB one goes for S$2,878 and the 12GB/256GB version costs S$2,698.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 packs in a foldable screen while weighing less than regular phones and it is barely thicker. Cameras are great too.

What’s happening isn’t so different from the past. Thirty years ago, traditional news outlets were caught out when Google arrived to disintermediate them from audiences – everybody found their news and information on Google.

Eventually, publishers such as The New York Times built up their digital content and worked with the likes of Google to refer users to their websites and sell advertisements and subscriptions.

The way forward could be similar deals with today’s new AI intermediaries, which will soon find that they need good original content to deliver the answers people ask for. As before, they just have pay for it.

Cloudflare is blocking AI scrapers from taking content from customers as they search for a deal with AI companies to monetise their content.

As infrastructure costs rise and businesses start seeking actual results from their AI investments in the past two years, Red Hat thinks it has the answer in open-source software libraries that make large language models (LLMs) run more efficiently.

The trick, it believes, is to reduce the cost of generating AI outputs and reducing the dependance on Nvidia’s much-sought-after graphics processing units (GPUs) that are used for much of today’s AI heavy lifting.

Through open-source software libraries that are compiled to help run LLMs faster – even on competing hardware like on AMD and Intel – Red Hat is betting that it can boost efficiency enough to overcome today’s bottlenecks and boost AI adoption.

Previously, IBM (Red Hat’s parent company) had been advising customer to go for smaller AI models, said Brian Stevens, the AI chief technology officer (CTO) for Red Hat.

However, businesses can now rely on more bigger models because they won’t have to worry as much about the cost of GPUs to get the job done, he told Techgoondu in an interview in Singapore.

Open-source software libraries that make large language models (LLMs) run more efficiently will boost AI inference, says Red Hat.

Amazon Web Services unveiled a first-of-its-kind Innovation Hub in the Asia-Pacific on June 26, seeking to win over regional customers that are expanding in AI, quantum computing, robotics and blockchain.

The sprawling 8,000-square-foot facility is another multi-million-dollar investment in Singapore, adding to last year’s pledge of US$9 billion to build cloud infrastructure in the Republic by 2028.

The new innovation hub is aimed at both public and private sectors, offering business leaders the opportunity to engage with AWS and Amazon-wide technologies, alongside over 30 partner solutions.

As with earlier models, Samsung’s The Frame Pro is a design-focused TV for folks who want a great looking screen that can double up as a painting in the living room. Its wireless breakout box adds to the flexibility of mounting it on a wall.

Crucially, for the first time, this new Frame TV also displays great images for movies, thanks to the introduction of mini LEDs. This makes it an excellent display that goes beyond design.

If you’re after a great looking TV that offers new home decor possibilities and still delivers great image quality that comes close to the best out there, then The Frame Pro is worth checking out.

Samsung's The Frame Pro now sports mini LEDs to deliver excellent image quality for movies in a design-friendly TV that will wow viewers.

IT security leaders in the Asia-Pacific are optimistic about the potential of agentic AI, with most identifying at least one security concern that AI agents could help address. However, significant hurdles remain, according to a global study released by Salesforce last week.

Half of the respondents in the region said their data foundation was not ready to optimise the use of agentic AI, while 57 per cent were not confident about having necessary guardrails in place for effective AI agent deployment.

The big thing about the Bravia 5 is the introduction of mini LEDs in its display panel. As their name implies, these are smaller than the typical LEDs found in older TVs or today’s entry-level models.

This gives better control over individual parts of a screen that display your picture. The result: Better contrast and deeper blacks, at least on paper.

Some of that promised picture quality is best seen in several scenes in Interstellar. Deep blacks are what you get – probably close to what you get on an OLED TV – when you stare at the nothingness of space in several parts of the movie.

The Sony Bravia 5 TV brings cinema moments to the home with its mini LED refinement but may be priced high compared to OLED rivals.

Action-packed and bursting with vivacity, Stellar Blade was one of the strongest titles released in 2024 for the PlayStation 5.

The acclaimed action-adventure game is finally available on the PC, and apart from being a visual feast in more ways than one, it is a technically impressive PC port that harnesses the technology of modern graphics processors but still caters to older machines with modest specs.

Stellar Blade (PC) looks great and runs fine on powerful graphics processors, while the Nikke DLC on Playstation will delight console fans.

These glasses, to be clear, play back music streamed from your phone and… that’s it. No, they don’t have any smart head-up display nor do they record any video, like other connected glasses.

But the Owndays x Huawei Eyewear 2 are great for when you don’t want to bring another piece of gear with you, say, during a walk in the park, or when going to the gym for a quick workout.

More than a novelty, the Owndays x Huawei Eyewear 2 are worth checking out if you’re looking for a new set of glasses and want music streaming for kicks. No, they are not real replacements for your earbuds but are surprisingly fun to put on.

More than a novelty, the Owndays x Huawei Eyewear 2 glasses play music surprisingly well and are also comfortable to put on.

If you’ve wondered what S$400 gets you for a phone in Singapore, then you’d be curious about the Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro, which costs S$399 and manages to squeeze in a three-lens, wide-ultrawide-telephoto camera array you’d expect from costlier models.

Notably, the CMF Phone 2 Pro’s retail price is a good S$250 lower than Nothing’s own Phone (3a) Pro, which we recently reviewed and also featured a three-camera array. Is the new phone’s affordable pricing too good to be true?

The Nothing CMF Phone 2 Pro packs in three cameras at the back at a low S$399 but quality varies and performance is a mixed bag.

If you are trying not to think about food constantly, Sedap! A Culinary Adventure is probably not the right game for you. Sedap, which means “delicious” in Malay, is a fast and furious cooking and combat game featuring Southeast Asian cuisine familiar to folks in Singapore.

Sedap is similar to cooking games like Overcooked and Cooking Mama, but with a clever twist in the form of hostile and uncooperative ingredients. For a food-obsessed Singaporean like me, Sedap stirs up crazy cravings for chicken rice, laksa, pad thai, sambal kangkong, ikan bakar, chicken adobo and bubble tea!

If you like cooking games or a uniquely Southeast Asian title with local charm, Sedap is an excellent game to savour.
