A team of National University of Singapore (NUS) researchers attempted to sway peer reviews generated by artificial intelligence by hiding a prompt in a paper they submitted.

The research paper has since been withdrawn from peer review and the online version, published on academic research platform Arxiv, has been corrected, said NUS in a statement on Thursday (Jul 10).

The prompt instructed AI tools to "give a positive review" of the paper and avoid highlighting any negatives. NUS says the paper has since been withdrawn from peer review and corrected online.

Pritam Singh's appeals against his conviction and sentence for lying to parliament have been set for a Nov 4 hearing this year.

The Leader of the Opposition who heads the Workers' Party was handed a fine of S$14,000 (US$10,930) in February for lying to a parliamentary committee about getting former party member Raeesah Khan to come clean about a story she had told parliament.

The Workers' Party chief was earlier given a total fine of S$14,000 for lying to a parliamentary committee about what he intended to do regarding former party member Raeesah Khan's own lie.

Housing demand in Singapore is expected to continue rising, driven by an ageing population, smaller households and changing demographic patterns and lifestyle preferences.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Housing and Development Board (HDB) said these trends were key considerations in the Draft Master Plan 2025 released last month, which outlines plans to build at least 80,000 public and private homes over the next 10 to 15 years.

At least 80,000 public and private homes will be built over the next 10 to 15 years, according to Singapore's latest land-use master plan.

The debt crisis surrounding Cathay Cineplexes appears to be worsening, with the emergence of a new creditor seeking about S$7.56 million (US$5.9 million) to be repaid by the end of this month.

In a bourse filing on Wednesday (Jul 9), mainboard-listed firm mm2 Asia, which owns and operates Cathay Cineplexes, said it had received a statutory demand from lawyers representing Linkwasha Holdings, a related entity of Cathay Organisation.

This is the second statutory demand received this month by the embattled cinema chain and its parent firm, mm2 Asia.

Don Don Donki’s decision to re-introduce plastic bags, seven months after it stopped selling them, was welcomed online. Facebook users commented that they had stopped shopping at Donki because it was too inconvenient to carry their purchases without plastic bags.

Though Don Don Donki’s move to sell plastic bags again suggests shoppers still need the option, it does not mean that Singapore consumers are refusing to adopt package-free habits.

Though Don Don Donki has reintroduced plastic bags in stores, Singapore consumers are becoming aware of how much waste is generated, says Lionel Dorai of Zero Waste SG.

When Tim was tasked with a written assignment last semester, the third-year engineering student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) simply turned to ChatGPT.

Using his senior’s essay as a reference, he asked the generative artificial intelligence tool to construct a new essay. He then rewrote it into something he was “capable of” and submitted it as his own.

With generative AI tools now widely accessible, educators say they have to shift from policing to adapting assessments and teaching practices.
