I came across an advertisement more than 10 years ago of a University under graduate asking for private tuition. I mean the undergraduate is not the tutor asking for students but the undergraduate is a student that is asking for a tutor to help him/her in his/her studies. This advertisement got me worried….

I was wondering what would happen to this undergraduate one day when he/she graduates from University and begins to work as an employee or setting up his/her own business to solve his/her client’s problem. Would they also be hiring tutors then to help them to solve their work problems then? Would they be equipped to solve their employer’s or client’s problem since they have not really been able to solve their own academic problems while still in University? N that is not to mention real life work problems are a lot more complexed than academic problems they are currently facing.

All these Q got me into deep thinking as I was also coaching Engineering Maths for some poly and University students then for. I ask myself what can I do to help them to be a better version of themselves? I did some reflection and research and came up with the strategy of imparting Independent Learning Skill to my then students.

I then begin to teach all my students even those in Sec school levels on how to study Maths independently. Independent Learning Skill apparently is similar to self directed learning which MOE has been advocating all these years. It is not learning without any Teachers, Mentors or coaches but able to take up serious ownership of their learning journey and seeking counsel or advice from Coaches, Mentors or Teachers whenever they need to.

I notice when I started to impart this to my students then, 100% of them were able to obtain at least a B3 for their GCE O levels exams and more than 90% of them obtained A1/A2 for the GCE O levels A Maths.

Emmanuel Learning Hub would be running the Maths Accelerated Program this Dec Holidays and I would only be taking in max 3 students per class. This Maths accelerated program aim to let students have a headstart of their next year syllables. We would also be teaching students how to take up ownership of their learning journey and how to learn Maths more effectively.

Teacher David Ng is a secondary school Mathematics assessment book author and has over 20 years of teaching experience inclusive of almost 10 years of volunteer teaching experience in Singapore Boys Home, University of New South Wales as a peer mentor and tutor in Engineering Mathematics to undergraduates, in his then primary school and secondary school as a Mathematics Coach to his peers as requested by his then Maths Teachers in school as well as more than 10 years of paid teaching experience with various tuition centres and Emmanuel Learning Hub where Teacher David Ng is the founder and Chief Maths Coach.
