The launch of “Neither Civil Nor Servant: Singapore’s Disruptive Economic Playbook” by Philip Yeo, the 16th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore, was held earlier last month.

The publication brings together three lectures delivered between March and June 2025, along with key insights from the accompanying Q&A sessions, offering reflections on Singapore’s economic journey and decision-making approach across different stages of development.

The first lecture of the 18th IPS-Nathan Lecture Series by Dr Shawn Lum, Senior Lecturer at the NTU Asian School of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was held earlier last month.

Titled “Singapore, Biodiversity and a Thriving City”, the session explored Singapore’s evolution into a “City in Nature”, highlighting the policies, planning, and environmental management behind this evolution. The lecture also touched on key issues such as human–wildlife interactions, shifting baselines in environmental perception, and the balance between accessibility and conservation.

The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session, where discussions ranged from the economic value of nature to the role individuals can play in shaping and caring for shared green spaces.
