United States Announces New Visa Restrictions For Nigerians, Others

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced a new rule that would impose fixed time limits on visas for Nigerian and other international students, exchange visitors and foreign journalists.

Okwute Daily News reports that the development marks another step in President Donald Trump’s broader immigration crackdown.

According to a government notice published on July 16, the rule would replace the current system that allows holders of F visas for students, J visas for cultural exchange participants, and I visas for foreign media to remain in the United States for the duration of their academic programme or employment.

The regulation is scheduled to take effect 60 days after its publication in the Federal Register, subject to congressional review.

The latest proposal comes as the Trump administration continues to tighten immigration policies following the president’s return to office in January 2025.

The administration has already increased scrutiny of legal immigration by revoking student visas and green cards of some university students over their ideological views and ending the legal status of hundreds of thousands of migrants.

Under the proposed changes, F and J visa holders would be granted admission for no more than four years.

Foreign journalists on I visas, whose stays can currently last for years, would be limited to a maximum of 240 days. Chinese journalists would face an even shorter limit of 90 days.

DHS said affected visa holders would still be able to apply for extensions.

The department said the changes were prompted by a sharp increase in the number of visa holders entering the United States.

According to DHS, there were more than 1.8 million student visa admissions in 2024, representing an 11% increase from the previous year.

During the 2024 fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2023, the US also issued visas to more than 500,000 exchange visitors and 37,300 members of the media.

Explaining the move, the department said the growing number of visitors “poses a challenge to DHS’s ability to monitor and oversee these non-immigrants while they are in the United States”.

DHS added that it has identified numerous cases of students and exchange visitors remaining in the country for decades under the existing rules.

Under the new regulation, anyone wishing to remain in the US beyond their approved period would have to apply for an extension through DHS or leave the country and seek readmission by re-entering the United States.

The Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Aloy Ejimakor, has shared his thoughts on the reason Igbo youths are not interested in joining the Nigerian army.

According to Ejimakor, the Army has repeatedly been weaponised against Igbos.

He asserted that Igbo youths are refusing to enlist in the Nigerian Army because they lack trust in the institution.

Ejimakor also noted that youths of the South-East are appalled by the integration of “repentant” Boko Haram terrorists into the military.

He wrote: “The reluctance of Igbo youths to enlist in the Nigerian armed forces is not a deficit of valor, but a calculated refusal to serve an institution they deeply mistrust. Historically and presently, Ndigbo face systematic marginalization within an ethnically unbalanced leadership structure in Nigeria’s security services.

“More critically, the armed forces are repeatedly weaponized against Ndigbo in times of crisis. The trauma of the 1967 army massacres of Ndigbo in the North remain an unhealed wound, constantly reopened by modern atrocities targeting youths suspected of IPOB ties, such as the state-sanctioned violence at Nkpor, the Aba prayer ground, Obigbo, the Trump victory rally in Port Harcourt, and many others.

“Furthermore, these youths are deeply appalled by the integration of ‘repentant’ Boko Haram terrorists into the military. To ask them to bleed under a biased command, alongside former terrorists, is a compromise of dignity they refuse to make.

“So, their reluctance to enlist is not cowardice. Instead, it is a quiet, powerful protest against an institution that has often betrayed Ndigbo.”

Kemi Badenoch, the Nigerian-born leader of the UK Conservative Party, has called on the Labour government not to dilute its proposal to extend the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) from five to 10 years, warning that a U-turn would undermine efforts to control immigration and strain public services.

In an open letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, co-signed with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp and shared on social media, Badenoch argued that temporary work visas should not serve as an automatic pathway to permanent settlement in Britain. She offered Conservative support in Parliament to help pass the original, undiluted policy.

“People who come to Britain on temporary work visas should not automatically be able to stay forever,” Badenoch stated. “This Labour government was right to make that harder. Now their MPs want them to U-turn. Conservatives will back Labour’s original plan to help get it through Parliament.”

The proposal, first advanced by Labour last autumn and echoing earlier Conservative policy announcements, would apply to migrants already in the UK. It could affect approximately two million people who entered on work visas since 2021. Badenoch warned that exempting them would represent a “grave mistake,” noting that five years is too short a period for indefinite settlement rights.

She emphasised that migrants who remain unemployed or in low-paid, low-skilled jobs roles that could potentially be filled by some of Britain’s 9 million economically inactive citizens should leave at the end of their visas rather than transition to permanent residency. Granting ILR too quickly, she added, would open the door to full access to benefits and eventual citizenship, placing an unsustainable burden on taxpayers.

Badenoch referenced her own policy shift as party leader in February 2025, when she first advocated doubling the ILR qualifying period and extending the wait for British citizenship. She has apologised for past Conservative governments’ role in high immigration levels, which she said strained public services and community cohesion.

The letter, also copied to Andy Burnham MP ahead of his anticipated role as Prime Minister, positions the issue as a test of Labour’s commitment to border control. “Whether or not you stand by your own proposals is a test of whether the Labour Party is serious about controlling our borders or not,” Badenoch wrote.

Reports suggest internal pressure from over 100 Labour MPs may be pushing the government toward exemptions or a softening of the rules. Conservatives have tabled similar measures previously and stand ready to lend votes to secure the change in the national interest.

The move comes amid ongoing debates over UK immigration policy, with the government also consulting on broader settlement rule changes. Critics of the extension argue it could disrupt workers who entered under existing rules, while supporters view it as essential to breaking the “conveyor belt” to permanent residency and citizenship.

IPOB Denies Military Claims of Arresting ESN "Explosives Experts" in Abia State

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly rejected reports circulating in Nigerian media that troops of the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services (DSS) arrested suspected IPOB/Eastern Security Network (ESN) explosives experts in Umuene community, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

In a public briefing released on July 13, 2026, by the IPOB Directorate of States (DOS), headed by Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the group described the reports as “false, misleading, and [to] be disregarded in its entirety.”

The statement, signed by DOS Press Secretary Dr. C. Okadigbo, asserted that no IPOB or ESN members or personnel were arrested in the community in connection with the manufacturing of explosives, arms, or ammunition.

The IPOB briefing outlined several points:

1. No Arrests Linked to IPOB/ESN: “No IPOB/ESN member or personnel was arrested in the said community… in connection with manufacturing of any kind of explosives or arms and ammunition.”

2. Recycled Evidence Claims: IPOB maintained that images and videos often shared with such reports are “recycled from unrelated incidents in different locations and occasions.” It described the modus operandi of the ESN as remaining “an unsolvable puzzle” to Nigerian security agencies.

3. Pattern of Propaganda: The group claimed this fits a recurring tactic used to justify heavy military presence and operations in Biafraland, which it says leads to the criminalization of communities and the arrest or disappearance of innocent Igbo youths.

IPOB reiterated that the Eastern Security Network was established as a community defense force in response to attacks on farmlands and villages, particularly by Fulani herdsmen. It accused the Nigerian government of deflecting attention from “the actual perpetrators of violence” in the region while attributing criminal activities to the “non-violent IPOB and the Eastern Security Network.”

IPOB challenged the Nigerian military to provide “verifiable facts” regarding any arrests and to allow independent media, human rights organizations, and civil society groups unrestricted access to investigate claims without bias.

“Our people in Abia State and the entire Biafraland deserve the truth, due process and genuine security not propaganda,” the statement concluded.

The denial follows reports from security sources on July 12 claiming a joint Army-DSS operation in Umuene community resulted in the arrest of a suspected explosives-making specialist linked to IPOB/ESN, with mobile phones reportedly recovered.

This is not the first time IPOB has dismissed similar security operations as fabricated or propagandistic. The group has repeatedly denied involvement in violence while positioning ESN as a defensive network.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian military has not issued a detailed public response to IPOB’s latest denial. The situation in parts of the Southeast remains tense amid ongoing security concerns as Biafra agitations continue to dominate discussion.
