✨ New Book Announcement ✨

We are thrilled to announce the Southeast Asia release of 's 'The Story Game', which has been lauded for its genre-defying form and emotional depth. Originally published in the US and Canada, the book was named one of the Best Nonfiction Books of 2024 by Electric Literature and Paste Magazine.

Blending memoir with elements of fiction, 'The Story Game' is both intimate and experimental—a fearless exploration of what it means to reclaim one’s past through narrative. Shze-Hui is one of the region’s most exciting voices, and we are proud to give this deeply Southeast Asian novel a home in the region. It is one of the most inventive books the Press has come across, and a remarkable singular work that challenges the boundaries of genre and form.

The book will be available in Singapore 🇸🇬 from 24 June 2025 at , , , , , and , retailing at SGD 30 (excluding GST). You can also purchase the book from our webstore (link in bio) 💫 The e-book edition will also be available via major e-book platforms from late June.

Shout out to for their vision in giving the book a certain grounded sparkle (we cannot get over the pearlscent shimmer of this cover) ✨💙

We are working on distributing this book across bookshops in Malaysia 🇲🇾, Thailand 🇹🇭 and Indonesia 🇮🇩 over the coming months! Watch this space⚡

A huge thank you to Linda Collins and the other writers for being part of this special project that is very close to our hearts.

We don't usually publish zines, but publishing stories about history, memory and grief – themes that we hold very close to our hearts – was an itch we had to scratch back in 2023, after Mien Tuc sent us their essay on their grandfather's legacy in the Vietnam War and asked if we were interested in publishing it.

One and a half years later, behold! This tiny but mighty zine, called 'Undertow' ✨ The definition of 'Undertow' means 'the undercurrent that moves offshore while waves approach the shore', and all the writers in this inaugural issue – Mien Tuc 🇻🇳, Linda Collins 🇳🇿, Loy Sye Yuet 🇸🇬, Shradha Biyani 🇮🇳 and Lawrence Ypil 🇵🇭 – navigate life's waves of grief through their thoughtful and moving pieces that touch on people, place, transitions and a state of being in Southeast Asia.

You can purchase a copy from our webstore (https://www.faction.press/product-page/undertow-issue-1), or at Knuckles & Notch (261 Waterloo St, #02-25, Singapore 180261; they riso-printed this magazine!!), and BookBar in Singapore :)

🎉 NEW BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT 🎉

For our first book for 2025, we are so very pleased to announce that we are publishing "The Missing Anthology: Stories from Singapore's S*x Workers" 🎊

Born from an open call and writing workshops organised by Project X - Singapore — the only non-profit organisation in Singapore that provides social, emotional, and health services to people in the s*x industry — this collection of pieces daringly experiments with form, genre, and perspective.

Edited by Project X's Vanessa Ho, Raksha Mahtani & nor, you’ll find pieces from fifteen bold voices on the importance of activism and its obstacles; short fiction exploring fantasies of violent liberation; and tender letters to loved ones and younger selves that reflect on their journeys and how far they’ve come.

"The Missing Anthology" will be retailing at SGD 28 (without GST) and 💡All net proceeds will be go to Project X 💡

For curious readers/bookcover appreciators: Yani Goh created the striking and beautiful cover art, which is titled, "L***y Physical Attraction S*x Drugs”.

The book will be available at Neo Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store, BookBar & Wormhole (https://wormhole.com.sg/) from mid-March! Alternatively, if you're purchasing this book from other parts of the world, you can pre-order/order your copy via our webstore* (https://www.faction.press/product-page/the-missing-anthology-stories-from-singapore-s*x-workers) or purchase the ebook from wherever you get your electronic reads 💻

Last but not least, we will also be launching this book at Book Bar on 9 March at 4pm! Watch this space for more details 🎉

* All orders from the Faction Press webstore will be fulfilled from mid-March.

🎉 Happy New Year, Faction readers! 🎉

Whenever we walk through the main store at Ngee Ann City, we never fail to pinch ourselves to see our Faction books in the Southeast Asia section of the bookstore. It's what we've always dreamt and hoped for since 2020, and we are so proud to have published and this year.

We are really grateful to every single person who has supported us, cheered us on, and recommended us to writers, publishers, libraries, literary agents, printers, booksellers, and readers. Faction Press could simply not exist without this strong community of publishing nodes, and we are so very grateful to be a small part of this global independent network ✊🏼

Our focus this year was history through our publication of Lio Mangubat's 'Sill, Silver, Spices, Slaves' and our co-publication of Dina Zaman's 'Malayland' with the fantastic Ethos Books ⚡

History is, after all, not just one event happening after another — it's fundamentally about people, power dynamics and systems that are at the consequential end of such events; the ripple effects of which can go on and on and on. The endless processing of such events is what motivates us to publish histories — both big and small.

We look forward to publishing more of such hi/stories in 2025, where we'll be publishing writers that touch on other themes that are dear to us — such as grief, memory- and place-making, and longing and belonging ✨ watch this space!!

Book time, fun time with on 26 & 27 Oct 🎉

Although we were only at the 10th on the 2nd and 3rd days, we met a TON of people who were curious about what we had to offer (Southeast Asian non-fiction! Wah!). Ourlearn more about 's Signals in the Noise, and 's Silk, Silver, Spices, Slaves ✨ We felt so inspired by all these conversations about reading and storytelling in our region, and were really excited what's next for the press.

There's one reader we didn't get a snap of, but a big thank you to Gabriella who has been following us for awhile, came by to say hi, and bought a copy of Silk, Silver, Spices, Slaves :) your support is very much appreciated!!

🚀 So what IS next for the press? Well our co-publication with – 's MALAYLAND – will officially belong to the world from 1 November! 🇲🇾 🌸🎉 Watch this space!

Less than two weeks til MALAYLAND ✨⚡🇲🇾

With less than two weeks til the publication of 's Malayland (our co-publication with !), we thought it was fitting* to finally post about a discussion our publisher, Shu Wen, had with Dr Ann Ang, Dr Kathrina Daud and a group of students from 🇸🇬 and 🇧🇳 at NIE a couple of weeks ago!
(*As you can see, the primary picture above is that of everyone posing Infront of the cover art of Malayland; Shu Wen had proudly mentioned it to this small audience before it was officially announced soooo we had to keep this group picture on the DL for abit 🙃)

As part of a discussion for the module 'Literatures of Southeast Asia', Shu Wen got to talk about the differences between fiction and non-fiction, why Faction is focused on Southeast Asian non-fiction, what books she'd love to republish (if the copyright gods permit), and what kind of narrative/creative non-fiction she's interested in publishing in the latter half of the 2020s (how are we already reaching 2025?!)

A huge thank you to Dr Ang for this invitation to nerd out over books and publishing Southeast Asia!! It was really lovely to meet everyone and to spend a couple of hours in their company. (The next day, the entire group got to visit several bookshops the next day, including , and 🌞⚡aka truly a literary way to explore Singapore ✨)
