《Serena's Super Adventures: Exploring Future Singapore》By Zhang Zi Xuan Audrey

Audrey loves to write - fun fact: sometimes, in class her teacher would tell her not to write too much words in her composition! She also likes reading and hasread more than 100 books in her life. Her favourite video game is Pokemon Go as she likes Pokemon. This story is focused on future Singapore as she has always wondered how it would look like.

About the story:
Serena, a creative and imaginative girl, loves drawing futuristic visions of Singapore. One night, after clashing with her strict parents over bedtime, she storms off to her room in frustration. As she tries to brainstorm more ideas for her drawing, strange things begin to happen. The moon seems to smile at her, the wind grows fierce, and suddenly—her bedroom door vanishes! A swirling, rainbow-colored vortex appears and begins sucking everything in, including Serena. A mysterious voice urges her to enter the portal, promising a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With no time to waste and her parents approaching, Serena leaps into the vortex. She lands in the year 2050 and meets a talking Merlion statue who becomes her guide. Amazed to be in future Singapore, Serena learns she was chosen because of her deep care for the country’s future.

INTERESTING POINTS:
1. Magical Realism: The blend of real-world frustration and a sudden fantastical twist with a portal appearing in Serena’s room is gripping and unexpected.

2. Portal to the Future: The idea of a vortex transporting her to 2050 is exciting and taps into the common dream of time travel.

3. Talking Merlion as a Guide: Giving the iconic Merlion a voice and personality adds humour, charm, and national symbolism.

4. Flying Adventure: Serena's flight over Singapore on the back of the Merlion gives a thrilling sense of motion and wonder.

5. Future Landmarks: The familiar-but-evolved Marina Bay Sands shows a clever way of blending the real with imaginative future changes.

We'll be hosting a book launch for the YOUNG WRITER ANTHOLOGY in celebration of all our Young Writers’ hard work!

Come join us at the Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) at the National Library Building on the 24th of May, 4.30pm to hear moving stories shared by our top Young Writers, all between the ages of 8-13!

The event will be co-hosted by Ms Taira Robles, Senior Editor for the BBC Earth Magazine (Asia Edition), and Ms Jenny Faith Koh (Jenny Faith Koh), writer and educator.
