Business networking used to mean hobnobbing and exchanging biz cards, but podcasts are creating communities that are more effective. As Gary Drenik explains in his Forbes article, "the intimacy of audio content, coupled with the convenience of on-demand listening, has created a perfect storm for community building." In simple terms, digital content & real-world opportunities will merge and the communities created by compelling podcasts will become indispensable centres for building your business network

Over the last four years, podcast listenership has grown with over 100 million people actively tuning into podcasts at least once a week in the US.

Business podcasting is big business, with shows like Acquired regularly topping the podcast charts. Interesting fact: The State of Business Podcasting 2024 report says only 5% of the 100 business pods go by seasons, which is popular for shows that want to take a break occasionally. This American Life, one of the longest-running public radio podcasts, has announced a subscription version of their erstwhile show. It's a result of a downturn in the ad market and a need to make up the short-fall. Doing bottom-line calculations and taking decisions to ensure a podcast stays in the black has become more critical as the industry matures

Maybe you heard the little promo episode we dropped today but in case you didn’t: We’re starting a premium subscription version of our program. The regular free version will continue the way you know it, everywhere it is now. But there’ll be this new version with bonus content and other stuff.

It seemed like only yesterday everyone was up in arms over AI cloning voices, but in a twist, a new podcast will launch with an AI-powered version of the late talk show presenter, Sir Michael Parkinson. The AI voice clone processed over 2000 interviews of Sir Michael and the entire project is produced with the blessing and participation of his family estate

Virtually Parkinson will be produced by Deep Fusion Films and Night Train Digital

Here's something slightly left-field: Audio Monuments creates audio documentaries that weave together interviews, sound design and music to tell the story of your loved ones or major milestones. After working with Singapore Hospice Council interviewing patients and caregivers, I'm fully convinced that audio is the perfect medium for capturing these emotions

Audio Monuments Preserve what’s most important with a timeless audio documentary. Imagine…All your closest friends and family are gathered together around a campfire. It’s your mom’s birthday, and everyone is taking turns telling their favorite stories of her. Some you’ve heard before, so...

A year after putting their podcasts behind a paywall, The Economist reckons they only lost 20% of their listenership & retained 80%, reaching 30,000 paid subs in half a year. Somewhat ironically, this article is itself paywalled, but the first lesson it shares is that people will pay for podcasts, which given The Economist's pedigree, actually means people will spend money on top quality podcasts

One year ago, The Economist took a leap of faith and moved all their podcasts (bar one) behind a paywall. It’s paid off, with the publisher saying they have retained 80% of listeners. Director of Podcasts John Shields looks back at what they’ve learn...

When Barack Obama was elected, there was buzz on his Blackberry usage. In the 2024 US Elections, the buzz is all about podcasts, with the candidates taking advantage of the longer format of a one-on-one interview to make their case on popular podcasts that aren't even news or current affairs. The Joe Rogan Experience episode with Donald Trump racked up over 1 million downloads PER HOUR in the first day of release

I get asked a lot on how to monetize a podcast, but almost never on how to *sell* a podcast. As in, hand over your precious baby to a company the way you might sell your start-up. It's certainly possible, as Heather Osgood of The Podcast Broker explains, but first you have to run your podcast like a business: proper bookkeeping detailing revenues & hard data backing up the audience outreach across all platforms is the minimum starting point

Selling your podcast 101. Learn how to create a podcast you can sell someday. Expert tips on how to increase the value of your podcast.

Yet another major act sells its back catalog for mad money, this time it's Pink Floyd. Bravo to Sony to get everyone to agree, and now how well Sony can monetise the music (film / TV sync, commercials, radio play) will determine their return on their $400m. It reminds me of the old adage - how do you make a small fortune in the music business? Start with a big fortune!

Despite decades of infighting and years of false starts, the members of Pink Floyd have agreed to sell music rights to Sony Music for $400 million.
