Drax has partnered with NGIS, a global leader in geospatial technology, to model and monitor the carbon stocks of forests in the US and Canada that supply its sustainable biomass.

NGIS will use Earth observation data, combined with Google AI and machine-learning tools, to measure the carbon sequestered in these forests. The system will also track indicators of forest health, such as tree cover and condition.

Data from the initiative will be accessible through a digital platform that allows Drax to view satellite imagery and compare forest areas over time to observe harvesting and regrowth.

A partnership led by Grown in Britain is developing the UK’s first certification scheme to measure and verify stored biogenic carbon and social value in construction.

The Biogenic Stored Carbon Quotient (BSCQ) certification marks a significant step towards aligning the built environment with the UK’s net zero targets.

The scheme is designed to help developers, architects, housing associations and local authorities demonstrate both the climate and social value of their projects. In doing so, it could open up new funding opportunities and speed up the transition to a low-carbon built environment.
