When work and busyness is our idol, rest feels like sin. Do we feel guilty when we rest? Can we even sit still anymore?Christian brothers and sisters, do we live and look just like the rest of the world operating under the oppression of an orphan spirit does: hustling and busy to the point of burnout, believing that things will crumble without us? Or do we sit at the feet of Jesus, listening intently and seeking to be obedient to the will of our Heavenly Father who cares for us? Rest is holy, and it is so important to God that it was a commandment in the Old Testament (Ex 20:8-11), it reflects God’s creation pattern (Gen 2:2-3), and is a perpetual sign of God’s everlasting covenant with Israel (Ex 31:13-17).Under the new covenant, rest is a gift, and Jesus says in the Bible that Sabbath was made for Man (Mk 2:27-28). When we choose to be uncompromising about the discipline of rest, we are making a counter-cultural statement of trust in the Lord: that He will provide, He will sustain, and that He cares for us in ways better than we could ever conjure up for ourselves.
