The True Singapore Ghost Stories Book 1 by Russell Lee has been reprinted over 35 times since its first printing in 1989. Very few titles in the world can match that. It's readership reaches millions and transcends generations. Soon after it was published, a Chinese translation was done and it sold out quickly. Now, as Singapore celebrates its 60th birthday, we thought it appropriate to bring back the beloved Chinese Edition. It's a new translation. The publisher has decide to borrow from the cover of the English book for the Chinese title. It's a beauty...

"Hello Chok Tong, Goodbye Kuan Yew" was published in the early 90's against a backdrop of tight political controls. Lee Kuan Yew had frowned on political cartoons as he didn't think they treated politicians respectfully. Singapore politicians were not like used-car salesmen. He didn't think the media should be aping Western values. So the establishment media steered clear of political caricature. At Flame Of The Forest Publishing, we saw the emerging "glasnost" inspired by new prime minister Goh Chok Tong as an opportunity for creative expression. Others felt we were entering into "where even angels fear to tread" territory. A battery of lawyers advised against it. Major book distributors refused to touch the book. Bookshops wouldn't sell it. Despite all the obstacles, the decision was made to publish. To be honest, the reaction was really scary. But the foreign press took notice and wrote about the publication. In Singapore, the media was generally muted. And yet Hello-Goodbye sold extremely well. Most Singaporeans loved it. They felt that it was about time. One reader bought all 400 copies on display from a bookstore, fearing it would be banned. Eventually, even Lee Kuan Yew saw the humour in the book. He cheerfully received the cartoons when they were plastered onto a placard for him. Bookshops started selling the book! Thankfully, we lived to tell the tale. This is it then... the book that broke taboos and liberated minds. A milestone in Singapore's political and publishing evolution. www.flameoftheforest.asia

There are few series that can entertain young Singapore readers like the Twinkletoes series. It's fun, educational and informative. Kids should avoid ebooks and read hard copy books instead. Digital reads destroy the imagination. Twinkletoes is about the adventures of Leandro and his friends in a Singapore school, MORRISON HIGH. If only all schools in Singapore were like the fictional Morrison High. Available at www.flameoftheforest.asia

Ameera loves the TSGS books. She was brought up by a single mum. Although life was tough, her wise mum did her best to get Ameera to read. But the books mum bought didn't interest her. Mum then tried TSGS. It was the start of a lifelong love for reading. Ameera scrimped and saved to buy more TSGS books on her own. Thirty years later, here she is, in front of Russell Lee, telling her story. She is doing well now and has two kids. Many will be able to identify with her story. One of Russell Lee's endearing legacies is fostering a love for reading among Singaporeans.
