🌿 An artificial leaf that makes clean hydrogen while cleaning contaminated seawater.
 
Scientists from NTU Singapore have developed a self-powered device that uses sunlight to produce hydrogen from seawater while breaking down hydrazine, a highly toxic industrial pollutant.
 
Led by Prof Lydia Wong from NTU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, the artificial leaf tackles two challenges at once: producing clean fuel without relying on freshwater, and removing a harmful contaminant from wastewater.
 
Published in Nature Communications, the research could pave the way for solar technologies that generate clean fuels while treating polluted water.

🧋 Spilling the Tea on Career Fair 2026

Over two action-packed days, our students connected with industry partners, explored different career paths, asked questions and exchanged ideas. They also got a glimpse of where their engineering journey could take them, meeting organisations including Apple, Applied Materials, DSO, GlobalFoundries, Huawei, Micron, Schneider Electric, Shopee, ST Engineering and more. 💼✨

And because career conversations are always better with bubble tea, the first 500 engineering students on each day also got a little refreshment to keep the conversations going!

We can’t wait to see where our future engineers go from here! 🚀

A recent networking session brought new and current students together to talk about the things that matter beyond the research, including student support, grants, clubs, events and even the not-so-small matter of finding your way around campus.

📺 In CNA’s series Breakthroughs - Race For Green Seas, Prof Jason Xu from the Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development Centre of Excellence (MESD) and School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) explores what cleaner shipping could look like, from green hydrogen fuel cells to putting Singapore’s first biodiesel boat to the test.

But what does it take to make these cleaner alternatives work better and ensure they are truly sustainable? 🚢

Dr Justin Seow and Dr Yeow Keat Ping, research fellows, are exploring these questions by developing better catalysts for more efficient fuel cells, while finding new ways to test and trace alternative fuels such as methanol.
