🏑 A home for a family of five, built to still make sense in ten years' time.

This resale semi-D was never meant to be a showpiece. The owners wanted generous space for entertaining, private retreats for everyone, and areas to display the things they'd collected over the years.

SG Interior Design's answer was restraint: soft neutrals, natural materials, and storage treated as part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. There's also an attic entertainment room with a dry bar for nights of hosting.

🏠 Ever wished your home felt like a stay at an Airbnb?

That feeling isn't down to styling. Short-stay interiors get no grace period. Guests form an impression in the first few minutes, so every design decision has to work from the moment the door opens.

Amanda Pang of AMP Design Co., who designed four boutique units in Malaysia, shares what makes those spaces work β€” and what lessons you can borrow for your own home πŸ‘‡

πŸ“š A couple who collect β€” books, tableware, and souvenirs from years of travelling β€” asked HID Studio to make their BTO flat feel like anything but a BTO flat.

Rather than packing it all away, the designers made the collection part of the architecture. L-shaped shelves wrap from the living room towards the dining area, working less as storage than as a curated gallery β€” and doubling as climbing routes for the couple's two cats. 🐈

Most people choosing a sofa or dining table aren't thinking about where the wood came from. KARANA Habitat is a good reason to start. 🌳

Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata has expanded his KARANA Collection with AHEC (American Hardwood Export Council) into a full living and dining range, built from American cherry, red oak and hard maple. All three are abundant, good-quality timbers that still get passed over for the more familiar names in furniture. Working with them anyway means designing around what's plentiful rather than what's scarce.

Four new pieces join the original three: the Klungkung Sofa, Negara Dining Chair, Negara Armchair and Negara Dining Table.

Privacy or greenery? In a landed enclave you often have to choose – opening a house to the garden means opening it to the neighbours too. 🌿

LAR+D found a way around it for this semi-detached house in the east. The bedrooms open onto terraces of their own, planted and stepped so the one above shelters the one below. Because the terraces are offset, passers-by get the greenery without the view in.

Twenty years untouched, and a layout that no longer matched the family living in it. 🏑

Typeface took this 1,500sqft Bishan maisonette back to its structure and started again. The balcony was absorbed into the living space and now serves as the dining. The enclosed kitchen became a dry pantry and island facing the living areas, with the wet kitchen tucked behind. Even the master bathroom door was finished to match the surrounding cabinetry, so it disappears when shut.

Most kitchens treat the sink, faucet and accessories as separate. Rigel has designed them as one complete workstation. πŸ’§

The chopping board fits right over the sink, so offcuts sweep straight in. The inner basin lets you rinse vegetables while the main bowl stays free for the dishes. And the faucet is hands-free β€” something you'll be grateful for when working with raw meat or flour-covered hands. Even the sizing has been thought through, with three options that suit anything from a compact HDB kitchen to a landed-home island. πŸ”ͺ

Most homeowners come to their designer wanting more space. This couple wanted somewhere to switch off. 🌿

The owners of this 1,550 sq ft unit at Reflections at Keppel Bay asked for a home where the busy day stops at the front door. Intheory Design turned a dark and forgotten pantry into a glass-enclosed study that folds open into the living area, with enough floor for the dog to tear around. 🐾

Close by, a cosy bar holds the couple's spirits and teas, all collected on their travels. 🍡

What's the one thing that makes your home feel like a break?

Guitars on display, cement screed underfoot, and concrete breeze blocks doing the zoning 🎸

Three-d conceptwerke carried the industrial freestyle approach from this couple's first home into their new resale flat. Breeze blocks screen the angled foyer, porous enough to keep light and air moving through the unit. In the kitchen, second-hand coffeeshop pieces were modified into stainless-steel counters, sink and shelving for a utilitarian space that's built for cooking 🍳
