The Housing Development Board (HDB) will selectively acquire privately owned HDB shops if needed and increase the overall supply of commercial units that it leases out, Senior Minister of State for National Development Sun Xueling said in parliament on Wednesday (Sep 24).

With the increase in supply of HDB shops, a higher proportion will be shops that are directly rented out by HDB, of which rents have been keeping stable in recent years.

Rental rates for privately owned HDB shop units were reported to have more than doubled over the past year.

Instead of writing in to the authorities to check on a shop's halal certification, consumers will be able to view updated information by scanning the new QR codes to be featured on these certificates from Oct 1.

The establishment's certification details, validity status and certification type will be accessible through scanning the code, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) announced on Wednesday (Sep 24) at the Singapore Halal International Seminar.

Al-Istiqamah Mosque at Serangoon North Avenue 2 was evacuated on Wednesday (Sep 24) after a suspicious parcel was found on its premises, said the authorities.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said it was alerted at about 5.20pm to a case of a suspicious parcel being delivered to the mosque. Police officers and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) personnel evacuated the building as a precaution.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the vicinity of 2 Serangoon North Avenue 2. Investigations are ongoing," said the police.

SCDF said its hazardous materials specialists conducted checks with detectors and found no hazardous substances

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Tuesday (Sep 23) evening it had been alerted to three new cases of suspected fraudulent bulk orders made by people claiming to be from the ministry or the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Singapore’s core inflation eased to 0.3 per cent year-on-year in August from 0.5 per cent the month before, official data showed on Tuesday (Sep 23).

The decline in visitors and the high costs of renovation were considered in the decision to relocate Geylang East Public Library to Tanjong Katong Complex in 2030, Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Rahayu Mahzam said in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23).

From 2015 to 2024, Geylang East library saw about a 31 per cent decrease in visitors, from 670,000 to less than 470,000, she said.

The new Berlayar housing estate being built on the former Keppel Club golf course site will have about 7,000 public flats, up from the 6,000 previously announced.

Fresh graduates in 2025 are feeling stronger competition in their job searches partly because more in their cohort are entering the job market immediately after graduation, Manpower Minister Tan See Leng said on Tuesday (Sep 23).
