A haircut. That’s all it took. Gone was the incredible strength. Samson, once able to tear lions apart, uproot city gates, and defeat enemies, was now left pathetic—captured, blinded, and forced to grind grain. His repeated disregard for warnings led him to reveal his vow’s secret to Delilah. The downfall was not just betrayal by others, but result of self-betrayal and losing his true self and God’s purpose. Self-betrayal often happens when we ignore our values and drift away from our calling.

"Abundance ought to be a good thing. It’s simply “more than enough”. You’ve got a fair share, and there is surprisingly more. This should result in an abundant mindset – share your surplus. Don’t hoard. Nothing given to you is meant for you alone. And don’t leave God out of the reckoning."

Once upon an illustration, there was this bumper crop. It caught the landowner by surprise and got him into a self-conversation: “I say to myself” was his typical management style. He sought his own wisdom – that’s how he hears himself think, revealing his established set of attitudes. Here....

Should Christians be surprised that life is tough?

Or has it become more complicated? Aren’t trials and tribulations to be expected?

There’s even a fine line between stress and anxiety. Both are emotional responses, mental health professionals say. But even when stressors are gone, anxiety still lingers.

Maybe we can unpack it: do we have “mental challenges” when we don’t get what we want, or is it, we don’t want what we get? Difficulties abound when we seek a bigger slice of a shrinking pie?

In the Impact Feb/Mar issue (Vol 49.1), read “Reflections of a self-confessed worrier”; “Too much, Too soon, Too Good”; “Hang On – unmasking ADHD”; “Praying with ‘Multiple Brains’”.

Two men, strangers at first, took very different paths through life. Somewhere in the process, they met. Some would say through a series of coincidences. Others see the providence of God brought them together. One, a first-time poet, and the other, a publisher, bonded through shared experiences of hardship and faith. Both resilient, they recognized that no one is truly self-sufficient. Yeo Whee Jim, the poet, faced profound loss and challenges, from his mother’s passing to his wife’s battle with cancer. Through these trials, he gradually came to trust in Christ. His friend, Fong Hoe Fang, shared similar experiences with illness and suffering.
