HARARE — President Mnangagwa has appointed Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza as the new Chief Justice of Zimbabwe, elevating her to the highest judicial office in the country following the retirement of Chief Justice Luke Malaba.

The appointment, which marks the first time a woman has been named to lead Zimbabwe's judiciary, takes effect on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya, confirmed the transition in a public statement issued on Thursday. According to Dr. Rushwaya, the appointment was executed in accordance with Section 180 (2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“His Excellency, the President, has, in terms of section 180 (2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, appointed Honourable Mrs Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza as the Chief Justice of Zimbabwe with effect from 15 May 2026,” Dr. Rushwaya stated.

Justice Gwaunza brings years of top-tier appellate experience to the position, having served as the nation's Deputy Chief Justice since March 29, 2018.

In his announcement, Dr. Rushwaya emphasised her readiness for the role. “Honourable Mrs Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza is qualified for appointment, having served as the Deputy Chief Justice since 29 March 2018 and possessing extensive judicial experience,” he said.

The Chief Justice is legally mandated to oversee the administration of the country's courts and is responsible for safeguarding the independence of the Zimbabwean judiciary.

Justice Gwaunza assumes leadership of the bench at a time when the nation's justice delivery system is undergoing institutional reforms designed to improve both operational efficiency and public access to justice. - Zimbo LIVE Harare
