Disability Inclusion -Sierra Leone recently wrote a letter to the Permanent Secretary to express our deep concerns about the construction of the SDA school in Moyamba. The structure, as it stood, was not accessible to children with disabilities. There was no ramp at the entrance, and the doorway was too narrow for wheelchair users and even those using crutches.
Today, we are pleased to report significant progress. The school has begun installing ramps at doorways and taking other steps to ensure accessibility. Our concerns were taken seriously, and meaningful action is now being implemented. This is a step in the right direction and a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when we raise our voices in a constructive and respectful manner.
As advocates for persons with disabilities, especially children in schools, we will always raise the alarm when things are not in our favour. But we believe in doing so through constructive engagement not through demonstrations laced with insults, but through dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy.
This is what inclusion looks like in action.
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Permanent Secretary, the school management, education stakeholders, and everyone involved in making this change happen. Your responsiveness and commitment to inclusive education are deeply appreciated.
Thank you for listening, thank you for acting, and thank you for standing with children with disabilities.
