The Jelly Woman of Makeni – A Sweet Stop on My Journey

One of the most meaningful parts of my travels, whether for journalistic assignments, PR campaigns, or consultancy work for , .press, and others is the people I meet along the way.

At NP Junction in Makeni, I paused to speak with an elderly woman selling jelly. With gentle hands and a knowing smile, she told me she’s been doing this for decades. That simple jelly, cool and sweet, has paid school fees, fed generations, and kept her dignity intact.

Her story reminded me how food, especially street food like jelly—is more than a snack. It’s culture, history, and survival. We should celebrate jelly not just as a favourite but as a proudly Sierra Leonean delicacy—worth sharing with tourists, worth preserving, and definitely worth documenting.

Each trip I take tells me something new about who we are. And sometimes, the most powerful stories come in the smallest cups.

Salone People Making the Change: Mariama Sahid at the Heart of European Policy Dialogues

Mariama Sahid, a passionate advocate for good governance and social justice, is currently representing Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) at the European Union Visitors Programme (EUVP) in Brussels, Belgium. Her one-week study visit, courtesy of the European Union in Sierra Leone, places her at the center of high-level policy discussions, diplomatic engagements, and strategic learning opportunities. With scheduled visits to institutions like UN Women, United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, UNFPA, the European Parliament, and the European Commission, Mariama is engaging with global actors on issues that matter to Sierra Leone and the continent at large.

Day Two of the programme offered a deep dive into children’s rights, gender equality, and the broader Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. In meetings with EU officials and partners, Mariama actively contributed to conversations on combating sexual and gender-based violence, child protection, and advancing inclusive peacebuilding frameworks. Her interaction with Sierra Leone’s Deputy Ambassador to Brussels, Madam Asmaa James, stood out as a moment of reflection, solidarity, and shared vision for shaping progressive national and global policies.

On Day Three, Mariama participated in strategic sessions that focused on the EU’s relationship with West and Central Africa, with particular attention to youth and women’s political participation, social inclusion, and safeguarding children’s rights. Through exchanges at the European Parliament and with organizations like Eurochild, she engaged with policy frameworks and best practices designed to advance gender equity and political representation. Her voice added a much-needed West African perspective to ongoing discussions on global development and democratic participation.

Mariama’s presence at the EUVP is more than just participation — it’s a representation of Sierra Leonean excellence, resilience, and informed advocacy. Her journey showcases the value of youth inclusion in international policymaking and the importance of building bridges between local realities and global agendas. As she continues to network, learn, and advocate, Mariama Sahid remains a beacon of change, boldly representing Sierra Leone on the international stage and inspiring a new generation of leaders back home.

Salone People Making the Change: A Global SRHR Youth Advocate from Sierra Leone

A dynamic Sierra Leonean youth leader, Buya Nabie Bangura continues to make waves on the global stage through bold advocacy and action for Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (AYSRHR). Recently invited as a delegate to the prestigious 8th RHNK Pan-African AYSRHR Scientific Conference in Mombasa, Kenya, this changemaker stands tall among Africa’s brightest youth voices shaping SRHR policy and practice. The conference, hosted by the Reproductive Health Network Kenya in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Kenya, brings together governments, civil society, and youth leaders under the theme "Adolescent and Youth SRHR in a World of Emerging Threats and Opportunities."

This Sierra Leonean's contribution to the AYSRHR movement is not new. From representing youth perspectives on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and participating in the "Nothing for Us Without Us" closing panel discussion, to lending his voice at the Kaleidoscope Kenya Launch, his advocacy is deeply rooted in lived realities. His powerful 1-minute message during the Youth Voices segment addressed abortion access, gaps in youth-friendly SRHR services, and the urgency of building rights-based, inclusive health systems, a message that resonated across the continent.

What sets Buya apart is his consistent involvement in cross-border projects and alliances, particularly with the Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance Kenya, and in other nations, contributing meaningfully to initiatives like Pleasure African Hub, Haki Yetu, Wajibu Wetu, Red Card kwa Grao (TPTW), and Pleasure for CSE Champions. These collaborations not only amplify youth voices but also foster mutual learning, solidarity, and sustained action across Africa’s diverse SRHR spaces.

As Sierra Leone continues to face challenges in youth health, gender justice, and access to information, leaders like this serve as powerful agents of change. Buya's journey reflect the spirit of young Sierra Leoneans who are breaking boundaries, influencing policy, and ensuring that no decision about youth is made without youth. This is the face of transformational leadership — grounded in purpose, guided by advocacy, and committed to a healthier, more inclusive Africa.

As a climate journalist, I see every clean-up, dialogue, and climate action not just as an event — but as a story that must be told. During the just-concluded coastal clean-up in Bendembu, Goderich, organized by , , , and , I witnessed young people, community residents and stakeholders, rising with purpose, confronting plastic pollution with energy and urgency. These are the voices and visuals that often go unheard, yet they form the heartbeat of climate action in Sierra Leone.

Through my journalistic lens, I document more than facts, I tell human stories that connect policy, community, and impact. Whether it’s capturing interviews with young climate champions, highlighting environmental hazards, or translating technical climate terms into local realities, I use the power of storytelling to ensure these efforts don’t fade away after the day ends.

I believe journalism is a climate tool, one that can shape perception, drive accountability, and spark behavior change. By amplifying grassroots action and frontline experiences, I’m committed to making climate change not just a global issue, but a personal, relatable, and urgent one for every Sierra Leonean.
