Sometimes, finding your voice can save your life.
Elita Karim is from Bangladesh and is currently pursuing her PhD at Arizona State University. In her powerful chapter, “The Day I Stopped Running,” Elita reflects on the moment she realized that she could no longer remain silent.

It was the day she chose to speak out, stand up for herself, and when necessary—scream. That scream saved her life, protected her dignity, and gave her the confidence to face the world.

While everyone’s got their eyes on parliament, families of those who were killed in the August 10 protests will be remembering their loved ones on the fourth anniversary of their death. Dozens of people were killed in the incident, including police officers. Joseph Lam Conteh lost her daughter, Fatamta who was shot dead. In this video, recorded two months after the incident, he talks about what happened to his daughter.

On July 17 2026, Hawanatu Conteh and her 9 children went to bed early in their home on Thunder Hill, Freetown. No electricity, no movie, just a quiet night. By morning a mudslide from their neighbor’s house had crashed into their room. Aminata 16, died instantly. Isata 14, died on the way to hospital.
Two other daughters survived, but the trauma remains.
