Freetown, Sierra Leone — Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has officially set the nation on a new path of progress with the launch of the 2026 National Population and Housing Census. The ceremony, held at the iconic Bintumani Conference Center, brought together government leaders, development partners, civil society groups, and members of the diplomatic community—reflecting the significance of this national exercise.

The launch signals the start of a major nationwide effort that will become one of Sierra Leone’s most extensive data-collection activities. For many in attendance, it was more than just an event; it was a moment of renewed commitment to building a country where decisions are grounded in accurate and reliable data.

Stats SL highlighted that the 2026 Census will be pivotal in shaping Sierra Leone’s future. Reliable population data, they emphasized, forms the backbone of effective planning—from improving schools and hospitals to guiding infrastructure development and strengthening social services. With precise and updated statistics, the government and its partners can better allocate resources and implement policies that address the real needs of communities across the country.

During the event, officials walked attendees through the major phases leading up to the census. These include detailed mapping of communities, integrating new technologies, recruiting and training field workers, and preparing for the actual enumeration period. Each step is designed to ensure a smooth, transparent, and efficient census process.

Authorities also called on the public to fully support the exercise. They reminded citizens that the census is not just a government activity—it is a shared national responsibility. Every household, every family, and every individual counts, and their participation will help paint a true picture of the nation.

In the coming months, Stats SL will roll out a series of public awareness and sensitization campaigns to engage communities and ensure they understand the importance of the 2026 Census. As Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, I have arrived in Guinea-Bissau to hold crucial discussions with the military leadership. My visit comes at a time of heightened political tension, and it is part of ECOWAS’ commitment to peace, stability, and constitutional order in the region.

Just days after the general elections—a time that should be about hope and the people's voice—we are instead hearing reports of heavy gunf!re ringing out near the Presidential Palace. It is terrifying to see videos of ordinary citizens, who simply want peace, running for their lives to escape the chaos.

The political tension has been boiling over, with both the incumbent, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and opposition leader Fernando Dias claiming victory before the official results were even released this Thursday. But vi0len€e is never the answer to a political dispute.

𝗧𝗼 𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗔𝗦: The time for statements is over; we need . We are watching a domino effect of instability across our continent, and it has to stop. We need strong, decisive intervention to halt these coups. Democracy is not just a buzzword—it is the lifeline of our nations, and it must be protected at all costs.
