UN Secretary General António Guterres has renewed his support for permanent African representation on the UN Security Council, making the issue a key part of his opening address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 22.

Addressing world leaders, Guterres said: “A 21st century Security Council without permanent African representation is unjust and indefensible.” He argued that global institutions must reflect today’s shifting balance of power, warning that “the power realities and interests of a largely bygone age” still shape international institutions. His latest intervention gives fresh momentum to the African Union’s long standing demand for permanent seats on the Council, as African leaders use UNGA 81 to push for greater representation in decisions affecting global peace and security.

Africa will host the World Athletics Championships for the first time after Nairobi was selected as the host city for the 2029 edition, marking a major milestone for the continent and for Kenya’s long standing athletics tradition. The decision was announced Tuesday following a World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest, with Nairobi beating competing bids including London and Rome. The championships will be staged at Kasarani Stadium, which is currently undergoing renovations.

The choice of Nairobi goes beyond Kenya’s reputation as a distance running powerhouse. The city has already hosted major international competitions, including the 2017 World U18 Championships and the 2021 World U20 Championships, and World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described Nairobi’s bid as compelling and emotionally powerful. For a continent that has produced some of athletics’ biggest stars but never hosted its senior global championship, the 2029 event represents a chance to bring the sport’s biggest stage home and expose a new generation of African athletes to the world.

Sierra Leonean bodybuilding star Edward Kargbo has delivered the biggest victory of his professional career after defeating 14-time IFBB Pro champion William Bonac to win the 2026 Flex Pro Weekend Italy, officially securing his qualification for the prestigious Mr. Olympia 2026 in Las Vegas.

The triumph comes just one week after Kargbo finished runner-up to Bonac in Spain, making his remarkable comeback in Italy an even more powerful statement. By overcoming one of the sport’s most accomplished competitor a former Mr. Olympia runner-up and one of bodybuilding’s modern greats.

Kargbo has firmly announced himself as a rising force on the international stage. Following his emotional victory, the Sierra Leonean dedicated the historic achievement to his late father, saying the moment fulfilled the dream they had always shared of becoming the first Sierra Leonean to compete at the Mr. Olympia. “With God, all things are possible,” Kargbo wrote, expressing gratitude for the journey that has now earned him a place among the world’s elite bodybuilders.
