Holding‎ The Mic For Hidden Voices

Today is International Social Media Day, and the theme this year is “Empowering Voices and Building Communities”; hits home for me.

‎As a social media intern for a foundation that supports widows and other underrepresented groups, I’ve had the privilege of being a bridge between silent stories and the world that needs to hear them.

‎ I met an older widow who didn’t just lose her husband, she lost three of her children. One of the few who survived is currently ill. And yet, somehow, she still finds the strength to talk, to share, and to hope.

‎Then there’s this young widow someone who doesn’t “look the part” like what society expects a widow to be. Her husband died, and now she’s raising their 16-year-old son on her own. She told me she’s grateful that he understands their situation. “My son knows I’m not rich, so he adjusts,” she said.

‎And at Milton Margai School for the Blind, Grace and Emmanuel lit up when they spoke about holidays, schoolwork, and the little joys of life. I wasn’t just meeting blind children, I met brilliant minds filled with joy and purpose.

‎And then there’s Dundas Oswald, a humble Sierra Leonean inventor creating electricity from salt and water. To add, he also created Sierra Leone's first robot. He denies being a genius, but I disagree (living proof of smart people not liking to be called smart).

‎These are the people I get to write about, their stories, their struggles, their strength and even though it’s me behind the screen, the truth is, they’re the ones speaking. I just hold the mic.

‎These, and many more, are the things I do and what other social media storytellers do. We bring hidden voices to light. And by doing this, we empower communities, uplift people, but most of all, we remind them that they are not forgotten. That their voices matter.

‎ Cost of a Safer Road

‎On Thursday, June 26th, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) demolished several unauthorized kiosks and business spaces at the Model New Road Junction, in an effort to enhance road safety and ease traffic congestion.

‎According to SLRSA officials, the operation is part of a broader, nationwide campaign to reclaim public spaces and ensure safety for both motorists and passer-bys. On paper, this sounds like commendable work and honestly, it is. That is, from a safety point of view.

‎But beyond the clear roads and open junctions lies a harsher reality: these kiosks were people’s livelihoods. Every broken-down stall had a story. A struggling parent feeding their children. A student supporting their education. A young woman selling to survive.

‎Yes, the structures were unauthorized, but they were also the only source of income for many. And now, they are gone. So, the real question becomes, Where will these people go? How do we balance safety with survival? In reclaiming space for the road, are we displacing people from their only path to a dignified life? These are hard questions, but they must be asked.

‎If this is truly a nationwide campaign, how many more will be affected? And more importantly, what support systems are in place for them to rebuild?

Stranded Sierra Leoneans in Niger Plead for Government’s Help

Dozens of Sierra Leoneans currently stranded in Niger are urgently calling on the government to come to their aid. According to reports, these individuals were on irregular migration journeys when they found themselves stuck in dire conditions, with limited access to food, water, and shelter.

The group includes young men and women who say they’ve been left in uncertainty for weeks, many expressing frustration and fear. Some report facing abuse, exploitation, and harsh treatment as they wait for help. While a few humanitarian agencies are offering limited assistance, the affected Sierra Leoneans are appealing directly to authorities in Freetown to intervene.

This situation highlights the growing challenges around irregular migration and the risks many take in search of better opportunities abroad. It also raises questions about what measures are in place to protect vulnerable citizens abroad and ensure safe repatriation in times of crisis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sierra Leone’s Embassy in Mali, which oversees Niger, are yet to issue a public response.

As the call for help grows louder, many are urging the government and international partners to act swiftly and bring these citizens home safely.

Talk and We'll Listen!

‎Hey people. So today is PTSD Awareness Day. ‎
‎ Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. This day is dedicated to those who battle with mental health challenges rooted in past trauma.

‎But here's the thing: trauma looks different for everyone. There’s no one-size-fits-all definition.
‎It could be: Sexual assault, a car accident, domestic abuse, losing a loved one, natural disasters, or even long-term family dysfunction or emotional neglect.‎
‎We all carry something. Some talk about it, others bury it deep. But today is a day to pause and say, we see you. You’re not alone. And we’re not just saying that. We’re all fighting something, in one form or another.
‎‎Today is not about "getting over it" because healing isn’t a straight line.
‎Sometimes, it starts with just talking.
‎Ask yourself: Do you have a safe space?
‎Do you have a friend you trust to say, “Hey… something happened to me, and I think I need to talk about it”?
‎‎Suppressing memories doesn’t make them go away. In fact, trying to shove them down is what brings: Panic attacks, anxiety, sudden mood swings, emotional shutdowns and anger you can’t explain.
‎‎So today, be honest with yourself. Are you really okay? If you’re not okay, that’s okay too. You deserve to be heard. If you're someone who says, "I haven’t been through anything like that", first, that’s a blessing. But your role today is to be a listener, a safe space for someone else, a bridge, a shoulder and a friend.
‎‎PTSD isn’t weakness. It's a sign that your mind is trying to protect you from what hurt you. So, let’s not ignore it. Let’s talk, let’s support each other. Let’s raise awareness, not just today, but always.

Street Structures Demolished at Model, Freetown

Police officers have carried out a major demolition exercise in the Model community near Albert Academy. The environment has been cleared of street market tables and structures belonging mostly to bike riders and taxi drivers.
Former vice chairman of the Model Bike Riders Union insisted that they had permits issued by Freetown City Council to set up structures in that area, which served as a central point for commercial riders. In spite of this, he said, they were given less than 24 hrs notice to vacate.
“These policemen came and demolished all market tables and the bike riders and drivers' office,” Kamara stated. He added that the demolition will hugely disrupt their livelihood especially since it is the rainy season.
“In such weather, normally bike riders and drivers take shelter under structures that have now been demolished, he lamented. “Now, if it rains heavily while we are working, we will have nowhere to stay.”
The demolition also affected market traders whose tables and stalls were removed. These structures, used daily for selling food and small goods, were reportedly the main source of livelihood for many. The move has stirred conversation in the community around urban management, short notice actions, and the balance between regulation and supporting informal livelihoods.

Happy international Widows' Day

She lost the love of her life… but not her will to fight.
On , the world pauses to honour women like her—especially in Sierra Leone.

💔 78% of widows in Sierra Leone receive no inheritance after their husband’s death.
💪🏽 Yet they rise—to raise children, to rebuild, to survive.

This tribute is for them. For their strength. For their silence. For their courage.

And for organizations like the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation, who are helping these women stand tall again—through empowerment, dignity, and hope.

MR. ONE’S POWERFUL TRANSFORMATION: FROM HIP-HOP TO GOSPEL MINISTRY

Once known for his punchlines and street anthems in Sierra Leone’s hip-hop scene, Mr. One has taken a bold and life-changing turn—leaving behind secular music to follow a higher calling.

In an emotional revelation, the rapper shared that his decision was inspired by a near-death experience after a tragic accident. That moment shook him, and he began reflecting deeply on his life’s purpose. Realizing that his talent was a gift from God, he made the choice to rededicate his voice and music to spreading hope, healing, and faith through gospel.

Mr. One’s journey hasn’t been easy. He admits to facing criticism and losing some fans. But in return, he says he’s found peace, purpose, and a deeper connection with God and his audience.

Now focused on spirit-filled music, Mr. One hopes to inspire other young Sierra Leoneans to find their path, stay true to their beliefs, and know that it’s never too late to start over.

His story reminds us that transformation is possible, and that even through pain, purpose can be found

🔥 Stars on Fire: Famous Calls Out Kao Denero Over Attack 🔥

Drama is back in Sierra Leone’s music scene—and this time, it’s serious.

Months after a backstage brawl at Ladies Fest in Freetown, artist Famous is breaking his silence. He’s now accusing Kao Denero—rapper and Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Entertainment—of being behind the attack on him and his crew.

The incident happened back on Feb 21, 2025, when Famous was headed to perform with Prezo Koroma. But before they could hit the stage, a group of men jumped them. Some bystanders pointed fingers at Kao’s camp—but nothing was confirmed. Until now.

In a bold move this May, Famous dropped a bombshell:
📱 “I’ve got the videos. I’ve got the witnesses.”
He called Kao a “coward” and “fake gangster” for denying it and blaming fans.

Kao Denero responded, saying he’s already spoken to police but insists people are “blowing things out of proportion” to ruin his name.

🎤 The police are now officially investigating.
🎧 And fans? They’re not holding back. One TikTok user wrote:
“Dem just start the beef, e go continue for life.”

Beyond the drama, people are asking serious questions:
How safe are artists?
Why are music shows turning violent?
And what happens when fame meets power?

This story’s far from over. And the streets are watching. 👀
