On 27th April 2021 Sierra Leone celebrated 60 years since independence from Great Britain. In honour of this occasion, filmmaker Sade Beckley-Lines created a documentary that showcases the true beauty of Mama Salone and her people. The theme is 60, and 60 Sierra Leoneans were interviewed on what they love about their country, and their hopes and wishes for the future of Sierra Leone.

Join us on Sunday 18th December as we screen Sierra Leone at 60 - The Diamond of Africa. You will be left feeling inspired by the past glories of this small nation and hopeful for its future!

BAANA Media is extremely proud to show
Sing Freetown: The Film at the inaugural . An uplifting and inspirational film about friendship and hope.

About the film:

Emmy winning Sierra Leonean filmmaker, Sorious Samura, has grown tired telling negative stories about Africa. He embarks on a journey with his best friend, Sierra Leone's most famous playwright, Charlie Haffner, to create an epic work of national theatre - a play to reclaim their country from negative media narratives and the damaging legacy of colonial rule. It doesn't go as planned.

Sing Freetown will be screened at the opening of the Freetong Film Festival on Thursday 15th December at 8pm.

Freetong Film Festival is proud to showcase, for the first time in Sierra Leone, Money Tree. A short film written and directed by Sierra Leonean-Australian, Hawanatu Bangura (hawanatub / ).

What happens when a young boy makes an exciting discovery, and is faced with a dilemma?

About the Filmmaker:
Hawanatu Bangura is an Afro-Australian award-winning director, writer and producer. She was part of the prestigious Screen Producers Australia: One to Watch program in 2017. Born in Sierra Leone, she migrated to Australia in 2002 and as a teenager discovered her interest in filmmaking when she was involved in a youth film project. She took the creative lead to make a short film and realised her passion for storytelling, creativity, and expression could be best channelled through the medium of film. Hawanatu relentlessly pursued this passion, attending her first filmmaking workshop and shortly after wrote and directed her first short narrative film about the experience of a person from an African background challenges and triumphs of settling in Australia.

Since then, Hawanatu has developed an impeccable eye for storytelling and honed her filmmaking craft. She has written, produced and directed over 12 short films in various genres including dance, experimental, drama, documentary and animation. Her films have won awards and screened at major film festivals such as Toronto International Film Festival Kids; Film Pittsburg, Pan African International Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, Montreal International Black Film Festival.

Hawanatu’s films are driven by her personal values – so themes of social justice, empowerment, identity, peace, hope, and wisdom are strong in her work. The stories in her films are universal, resonating with audiences far and wide. Hawanatu is passionate about using her films as a platform to raise consciousness about social issues and social injustices.

Don’t miss Money Tree, showing on Thursday 15th December at the Freetong Film Festival!
