Why do so many Sierra Leoneans continue to suffer in silence?

Deep-rooted stigma, cultural misconceptions and fear of judgment have made mental health difficult to discuss openly. For generations, mental health challenges have often been misunderstood as spiritual attacks, supernatural problems or personal weakness.

Sierra Leone’s history of conflict, Ebola, natural disasters, economic pressures and other national challenges has also left lasting psychological effects on individuals and communities.

But as awareness grows, are we changing the way we understand and respond to mental health?

On this episode of Focus Salone, we explore the roots of mental health stigma, why people remain afraid to seek help, how perceptions are changing, and what must be done to make mental healthcare more accessible and accepted.

As schools reopen across Sierra Leone, thousands of children are returning to classrooms with dreams, aspirations and hopes for a better future.

But for vulnerable children, returning to school can come with challenges that go beyond the classroom. Access to education, school materials, financial support and a safe learning environment can make the difference between a child staying in school and being left behind.

Are we doing enough to invest in the future of Sierra Leone’s vulnerable children?

Join us as we explore the challenges facing vulnerable children and what families, communities, government and other stakeholders can do to ensure every child has a fair chance to learn, grow and succeed.
