STATS SL RECEIVES 25,000 TABLETS AHEAD OF DECEMBER 2026 DIGITAL CENSUS

Freetown, October 8, 2026 — Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has received 25,000 tablets, power banks and protective cases as preparations intensify for the country’s 2026 Population and Housing Census (PHC) scheduled for December.
The latest consignment, fully funded by the Government of Sierra Leone, is expected to play a central role in the nationwide digital enumeration exercise.

The new equipment adds to the 4,000 tablets received in 2025 and used during the national cartographic mapping exercise, further expanding Stats SL’s technological capacity ahead of the main Census data-collection phase.

The tablets will serve as the primary devices for collecting Census information electronically, allowing enumerators to capture, validate and transmit data directly from communities across the country.

According to Stats SL, the transition to digital data collection is expected to improve the efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of the Census while reducing dependence on paper questionnaires and extensive manual data entry.

The devices will also support data-quality assurance through built-in validation features designed to help enumerators and supervisors identify potential errors or inconsistencies during the enumeration process.

Speaking during the official receipt of the equipment were Dr. Colins Opiyo, Chief Technical Adviser for the 2026 Census; Samuel Ansumana, Director of Communication and Public Relations; and Moses Johnson, Officer-in-Charge of Operations and Logistics.

They described the arrival of the 25,000 tablets as a significant milestone in the technical and operational preparations for the Census, emphasizing the importance of the devices to the digital collection, validation and transmission of Census data.

Stats SL says it remains focused on delivering a credible, accurate, reliable and inclusive Census capable of providing data that reflects the realities of Sierra Leone's population and communities.
The institution is also continuing to strengthen its systems, technology, operational processes and technical preparations to ensure that the Census produces reliable statistics for national planning, policymaking and evidence-based decision-making.

Stats SL has urged the public to cooperate with
Census personnel, provide accurate information and ensure that every household and individual is properly counted.

The institution says the success of the 2026 Census will depend significantly on the active participation and cooperation of the public.

SIERRA LEONE MOVES TO MAKE NATIONAL BUDGET MORE GENDER-RESPONSIVE

FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE — What government spends money on can determine who benefits from development — and Sierra Leone is taking steps to ensure that women, men, girls and boys are considered in the country’s budgeting process.

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, with support from UNDP Sierra Leone, has concluded a two-day Gender-Responsive Budgeting (GRB) workshop aimed at strengthening the ability of government institutions to incorporate gender
considerations into public spending decisions.

The workshop brought together gender focal persons from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and was conducted under the Equanomics Project, funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Turning Gender Commitments Into Budget Decisions
Gender-responsive budgeting seeks to ensure that government policies and financial allocations take into account the different needs and experiences of women, men, girls and boys.

During the workshop, participants were equipped with practical tools to integrate gender considerations across the various stages of Sierra Leone’s national budget cycle.

Through case studies and hands-on exercises, participants applied gender analysis and sex-disaggregated data to examine government programmes, identify areas where different groups may be affected differently, and explore ways of making public investments more equitable.

A key component of the training was the development of Gender Budget Statements, which can help government institutions demonstrate how proposed spending addresses gender-related needs and priorities.

Focus on Accountability and Equitable Spending
The initiative comes amid growing efforts to strengthen governance, accountability and inclusive development in Sierra Leone.
The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs and UNDP say strengthening the capacity of gender focal persons is important for ensuring that gender equality commitments are reflected not only in policies, but also in actual government investments.

By improving the use of gender analysis and reliable data in budgeting, MDAs can better identify gaps in public services and direct resources toward programmes capable of producing more equitable outcomes.
The broader objective is to move gender equality from policy commitments into measurable results through public expenditure.

The workshop therefore represents another step toward strengthening Sierra Leone’s budget process and ensuring that national development spending responds more effectively to the diverse needs of its population.
The message is clear: if budgets shape development, then gender equality must also shape the budget.

UNICEF, EDUCATION OFFICIALS ASSESS IMPACT OF TEACHER TRAINING IN KENEMA

KENEMA, SIERRA LEONE — The real test of teacher training is not what happens inside a workshop, but what happens when teachers return to the classroom — and in Kenema, education officials are seeing those lessons put into practice.

UNICEF Representative Mariko Kagoshima, the National Chief Education Officer of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) and other education officials visited Marian Pre School in Kenema to observe teachers applying skills gained through training supported by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

The visit provided an opportunity for education officials to see firsthand how teachers are translating newly acquired knowledge and teaching approaches into everyday classroom practice.

During the classroom observation, teachers were seen engaging young learners through questions, encouraging participation and creating opportunities for children to learn through interaction and play.
The approach highlights the importance of practical teacher development, particularly at the early childhood level, where classroom engagement can play an important role in supporting children's learning and development.

FROM TRAINING TO CLASSROOM PRACTICE

The visit also underscored a key challenge in education — ensuring that teacher training goes beyond workshops and translates into meaningful changes in how lessons are delivered.

When teachers are equipped with practical skills and confidence, they can create more interactive learning environments where children are encouraged to participate, ask questions and develop their understanding through play and engagement.

UNICEF says strengthening teacher capacity remains an important part of efforts to improve the quality of learning for children across Sierra Leone.

The organisation continues to work with the Government of Sierra Leone and partners, including the Global Partnership for Education, to support teachers and strengthen the education system.

The visit to Marian Pre School therefore offered a practical demonstration of how investment in teachers can reach the classroom — where its impact ultimately matters most: in giving every child a better opportunity to participate, learn and thrive.
