The Commemoration of International Day of the Girl Child - October 11th, 2024

On October 11th, 2024, St. George Foundation, the organization behind *Pikin Tok Radio*, joined the global celebration of *International Day of the Girl Child*.

The event took place at the Waterloo District Council Hall, Sierra Leone. Organized by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender, and Children’s Affairs in partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation Sierra Leone (AHF), the event brought together key stakeholders including representatives from UNAids, the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS), the National Commission for Children (NCFC), and the Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL).

This year's theme, "Girls’ Vision for the Future," aimed to amplify the voices of young girls and address crucial issues like child marriage, child protection, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

The event featured a debate on the theme, with participation from schools in the Western Rural District such as FAWE School for Girls, Al Bayan, and Peninsular School Waterloo. Additionally, representatives from the Children’s Forum Network and other partners engaged in discussions.

The day was climaxed by an inspiring address done by Honorable Madam Mariama Zombo on the *Child Marriage Act 2024. This policy, which she and other dignitaries presented to Parliament on June 20th, was officially signed into law on July 2nd, marking a significant step towards protecting girls' rights in Sierra Leone.

NP (SL) Limited has donated school materials to the Children Academic Investment Foundation (CAIF) at the Company's Terminal in Kissy as part of its corporate social responsibility sponsorship.
NP SL's Communication Manager, Dr Williette James and the Hon. Member of Parliament in the Kissy Dockyard Community, Princess Daramy, graced the event.
Handing over the school materials to CAIF on behalf of the Company, Dr. James expressed admiration for the Foundation’s effort to support the community. She noted that CAIF's mission to support less privileged children attracted the Company’s attention to support the laudable venture.
Among other things, the donation comprised school materials, including books, pencils, erasers and bags.
In response, the Chairman of the CAI Foundation, Mr. Sayoh Sesay appreciated NP SL for its altruistic act and support to the Foundation. "From the depths of our hearts, we truly appreciate NP SL for the provision of school materials for 50 less privileged and homeless children." The Chairman noted that since the CAIF’s establishment in 2019, NP SL is the first organisation to majorly sponsor the Foundation by reaching out to the children in such a noble way.
The Secretary of the Community Development Action Plan (CDAP) Mr. Jeremiah Mansaray also spoke highly of NP SL's altruistic act and noted that the support was timely, as it arrived on the first day of the reopening of schools.
Relatively, NP SL is committed to supporting such strides with its corporate social responsibility programs, especially when the intention is an initiative to provide educational resources. The Company recognises that educational disparities can limit opportunities and hinder the growth of future generations.

"I will make SLRSA an Institution of integrity " so says Reverend Smart Senesie .

In a thrilling revelation, the Executive Director of Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, Reverend Smart K Senesie has recently said he wants to transform the Institution to an institution of integrity.

He made this statement in an exclusive interview conducted with the Society for Democracy 98.1 whilst updating the press about recent arrest made my the Anti Corruption Commission on their Headquarters on Kissy Road in Freetown.

The Executive Director noted that he has been doing well in terms of revenue mobilization and protection since he took over the office as Executive Director following his appointment by His Execellency the President to one of the Country's Revenue Generation Institutions, SLRSA.

He said, his quest to fighting against corruption remains unfettered and cornerstone of their works adding that is why he recently invited the Commission represented by their "Scorpion Squad " to investigate after his Internal Auditors noticed that there had been some fraudulent activities taking place and therefore loss of huge junk of money something he said is unfair and unfortunate.

He said, the Authority had been struggling with the issue of " fake licenses " something he has permanently addressed.
" There is nothing like fake licenses at the moment at the Authority " he said.

The Revered " Man of God" said one of the ways to make the country is by transitioning major and critical government institutions to Institutions of integrity by fighting against corruption from all fronts of society no matter who is involved adding that corruption is a typical hindrance to national development.

" l will change the narrative at this Authority so that my name would be written in the good history books of salone " he said.
The Executive Director remains very focused to figuring out corruption as a major problem in the country.

unscrupulous staff " within the shortest possible time whilst assuring the Anti Corruption Commission of full compliance to the Investigation as things unfold in incoming days.

▪️ All 5 survivors who were receiving treatment at Rokupa Hospital have been discharged.
▪️ 3 survivors are still receiving care at Choithram Hospital.

Trapped Victims:
Status: The NDMA reasonably believes that no individuals remain trapped at this time.

- The rescue team today recovered the body of the 4-year-old child, previously reported missing by his father.

The rescue operation will continue tomorrow on the floors used as storage areas. This phase of the operation aims to assist owners in recovering their goods.

▪️ All 5 survivors who were receiving treatment at Rokupa Hospital have been discharged.
▪️ 3 survivors are still receiving care at Choithram Hospital.

Trapped Victims:
Status: Unknown

- The rescue team continues searching for a 4-year-old child, reported missing by his father, and a 1-year-old child, believed to be trapped beneath the rubble, based on eyewitness accounts.

The NDMA, in collaboration with Honourable Princes Kadie Daramy, successfully engaged residents whose structures were marked for demolition to allow excavators better access to ground level. The residents have relocated, and the demolition has taken place. Excavators are now operating from the ground level.

There have been no further recoveries of victims from the rubble on the 20th and today, the 21st.

Dr. Mathew Wilson Kamara visited the site, where he was briefed by the Director General of NDMA, Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Brima Sesay, on the ongoing rescue efforts.

The NDMA would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all partners, especially the Executive Director of the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA), Thomas Kamara, for his steadfast support and daily involvement since the incident occurred.

The Gento Group of Companies, Marampa Mines, and Sierra Rutile Limited continue to provide personnel, machinery, and fuel to support the ongoing rescue operations.

▪️ All 5 survivors who were receiving treatment at Rokupa Hospital have been discharged.
▪️ 3 survivors are still receiving care at Choithram Hospital.

Trapped Victims:
Status: Unknown

- The NDMA has confirmed from a father that his 4-year-old child is still missing.
- An eyewitness also reported the missing of a one-year-old child in a building underneath where eight dead bodies were recovered.
- ⁠There are still unconfirmed reports from neighbours about the possibility of more people being trapped in the rubble.

A meeting was held at the office of the Vice President, Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh with all stakeholders involved in the rescue effort, and the following decisions were agreed upon:
1. Allow families who lost loved ones to have access to the corpses for burial.
2. ⁠Demolish some makeshift structures underneath the debris to enable excavators to access ground level, ensuring the safety of both operators and machinery.
3. ⁠The Honourable, Princess Kadie Darammy, Councillors, and the NDMA will engage the affected individuals whose structures are to be demolished.

The NDMA also held discussions with the executive of the Sierra Leone Institute of Engineers, who have agreed to provide technical guidelines for the remaining operations.

Yesterday, while clearing debris, rescue operators recovered a total of NLe55,600, which was handed over to the rightful owner, Mohamed Jalloh, by Honourable Daramy and the NDMA today.

The NDMA extends its sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, the National Public Health Agency, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Human Rights Commission Sierra Leone, and the Sierra Leone Police for their unwavering dedication to the response efforts.

The Gento Group of Companies, Marampa Mines, and Sierra Rutile Limited continue to provide personnel, machinery, and fuel to aid in the rescue operations.

The NDMA remains committed to coordinating the response efforts and ensuring that any remaining individuals trapped in the rubble are recovered.

Reverend Smart Senesie is the New Beacon of Hope for Sierra Leone.

The Executive Director of Sierra Leone Road Safety, Reverend Smart Senesie has been termed as the new beacon of hope by many pundits following his transformative drives.

The recent one has
brought praises on the Executive Director of Sierra Leone Safety Authority, Reverend Smart K Senesie following an on -the -spot- raid conducted by the Anti Corruption Commission recently at their Headquarters at Kissy Road in Freetown.

That arrest is part of efforts and unprecedented move by the Authority to ensure and enhance transparency and accountability being the first Executive Director to set the record straight.

The Presence of Reverend Smart Senesie at the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority has brought goodness , innovative drives by preparing the institution as an institution of integrity.

" since l took over this office l have been able to put the issue of fake licenses in the country ,this is something this institution has grappled with over the last ten years" he said.

" we invited the Commission to investigate us after our Internal Auditors noticed that there has been some fraudulent activities taking place and that is why they came " he said.

" we will support the Anti Corruption Commission
Many people believe or think that after this arrest there would be no work but with the astatute leadership of the Authority under the distinguished Reverend Smart Senesie has swiftly trained personnel to replace those under investigation.
" we have to support the president on his vision to fight corruption and ensure the feed salone project succeeds and this could only happen if we can mobilize resources to support and SLRSA can do this " he said.
The Authority has thirteen revenue streams and we must explore all of them to ensure the president succeeds and we must do do if we fight against corruption and instill the culture of integrity among our staff and many people believe that the Executive Director is on the right trajectory.
The ED is very firm and calculated in terms of decision making and has garned enormous respect and supports from amongst government officials and party cohorts as he continues to give hope to the party and people of Sierra Leone by instilling sanity into public office notably SLRSA.

The NDMA wishes to express its profound gratitude to the selfless rescue personnel and community volunteers for their tireless efforts in freeing those trapped in the rubble.
