The Commemoration of International Day of the Girl Child - October 11th, 2024
On October 11th, 2024, St. George Foundation, the organization behind *Pikin Tok Radio*, joined the global celebration of *International Day of the Girl Child*.
The event took place at the Waterloo District Council Hall, Sierra Leone. Organized by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender, and Children’s Affairs in partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation Sierra Leone (AHF), the event brought together key stakeholders including representatives from UNAids, the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS), the National Commission for Children (NCFC), and the Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL).
This year's theme, "Girls’ Vision for the Future," aimed to amplify the voices of young girls and address crucial issues like child marriage, child protection, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
The event featured a debate on the theme, with participation from schools in the Western Rural District such as FAWE School for Girls, Al Bayan, and Peninsular School Waterloo. Additionally, representatives from the Children’s Forum Network and other partners engaged in discussions.
The day was climaxed by an inspiring address done by Honorable Madam Mariama Zombo on the *Child Marriage Act 2024. This policy, which she and other dignitaries presented to Parliament on June 20th, was officially signed into law on July 2nd, marking a significant step towards protecting girls' rights in Sierra Leone.
Let’s continue to uplift and empower our girls for a brighter future! 🌍✨
