With the best of intentions, President Julius Bio is proposing the adoption of the Proportional Representation system into the makeup of the executive branch and the wider public.

Having served as President for seven years, the President must have seen, at first hand, how this country is polarised.

Many people have argued that, the fight for political power in Sierra Leone is a fight over state resources. He who controls power, controls state resources!

The winner takes all system of governance has created a lot of bitterness and tension in the country.
What President Bio is proposing now is a mild form of power sharing. The wining party gets 70% of cabinet positions and other positions in government. The remaining 30% goes to the other political parties that win seats in Parliament.

We encourage President Bio to press ahead with this brilliant proposal. If possible, we can even put it to a vote in a referendum.

President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and even President Ernest Bai Koroma attempted to bring prominent opposition members into their governments. But they both failed to develop any sound policy around extending the PR system to the executive arm of government. This inclusive governance system has worked very well in several post-conflict countries.

On the occasion of the State Opening of the Third Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone on Thursday, President Bio noted that, “Proportional Representation stands as a powerful force for inclusive governance.
It guarantees fair representation of all regions, ethnicities, and genders. It broadens political participation and reduces electoral tensions and polarization”.

The winner takes all system of governance has failed to bring this country together. If anything, it has significantly contributed to polarize the country and create unnecessary tension in the country.

It is time to support President Bio’s proposal for a power-sharing or an inclusive governance system. We believe that this will work in the best interest of the country.

If this proposal is approved, it will be one of the greatest legacies of the Bio Presidency. This is a beautiful idea!

Freetown, 5 August 2025 – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, who currently serves as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO), has pledged to revitalise the operations of all WAPCCO sub-committees relevant to policing across the region. The move aims to foster stronger collaboration and enhance regional policing standards.
As part of this renewed commitment, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Sahr Yomba Senesi, has departed Sierra Leone for Abuja, Nigeria, to represent the IGP at the Annual Police Focal Point Meeting, taking place on 6–7 August 2025.
The meeting will focus on the development of a comprehensive Police Roster for Peace Support Operations (PSOs) within the ECOWAS region. The initiative seeks to establish a structured, transparent, and competency-based system aligned with regional standards, international best practices, and the priorities of host countries.
Key objectives of the roster include the creation of a standardised pool of mission-ready, vetted, trained, and deployable police officers from all ECOWAS member states. This will enable a timely and coordinated regional response to emerging security challenges.
Additionally, the meeting will explore mechanisms to bolster operational readiness within national police institutions, positioning the police roster as a cornerstone of West Africa’s security architecture.
DIGP Senesi is expected to deliver a keynote address during the opening ceremony. His participation will further elevate the profile of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) on the international stage, reflecting its growing capacity to support ECOWAS-led peace operations and reinforcing professionalism, interoperability, and solidarity across the region.
