Cameroonian university dropout Ayissi William launched first locally made sneakers in Cameroon

Ayissi William, a young Cameroonian, has unveiled Cameroon’s first locally made sneakers.

He is the lead designer and founder of ICE footwear.

At age 24, he dropped out of university in 2017 and launched his own company, ICE Footwear.

Growing up, Ayissi was a fan of Nike, Adidas and Puma sneakers but he never had the opportunity like his peers to have one.

It inspired him to start a footwear company.

"I felt like I could definitely do something like Nike, Adidas and Puma," he told The African Dream.

Despite the popularity of brands like Nike, Adidas and Puma among young Africans, Ayissi believes the uniqueness of his ICE sneakers makes his products stand out from other brands.

A pair of ICE sneakers costs $35. They are available in Cameroon and South Africa.

Mali Arrests 55 Soldiers and One French Operative for Plotting to Overthrow President Assimi Goïta

Malian authorities have arrested 55 soldiers, including Yan Christian Bernard Vezilier, a French operative working for France’s national intelligence agency.

Among the 55 soldiers detained are some of Mali’s most senior military officers and trusted associates of President Goïta.

According to Malian intelligence, the coup attempt was orchestrated in collaboration with France’s intelligence agency, the DGSE.

Those arrested include two of Mali’s most high-profile generals: Brigadier General Abass Dembele, former governor of the Mopti region, and Brigadier General Nema Sagara, one of the most prominent women in the Malian army, who was promoted to the rank of General by President Goïta in 2024.

Surprisingly, Lieutenant-Colonel Baba Dembele, a close friend of the president, was also among the coup plotters. This brings to mind 1987, when Thomas Sankara was betrayed and removed by his trusted friend and companion, Blaise Compaoré.

We all saw this coming. Since the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, these three nations have cut all ties with France and Western influence.

Naturally, the powers in France are unhappy with the Alliance of Sahel States. They are used to having their loyal leaders in charge so they can maintain control and influence. This coup attempt is just the latest evidence that Paris will not stop trying to undermine its former colonies that have broken free from its grip.

France will not relent until it reclaims full influence over its former colonies. Therefore, the only way to stop such interference is to respond with equal resolve. If France is determined to destabilize these countries, then Mali should take decisive and public action against the foreign operative involved, making it clear that any attempt to undermine the nation will be met with firm and uncompromising consequences.
