SLP CONDUCTS TACTICAL DRIVING TRAINING SESSION FOR UN DRIVERS
*Hastings, Freetown - February 13, 2025* - The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP), has officially launched a three-week tactical driving training session for United Nations drivers at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA) in Hastings, Freetown. This initiative stems from Inspector General William Fayia Sellu's commitment to strengthening partnerships with UN agencies dedicated to serving the people of Sierra Leone.
The Head of Training, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alpha Kamara, warmly welcomed both trainers and trainees, underscoring the importance of collaboration as they refine their tactical driving skills, facilitated by the provision of necessary resources and the training facility.
Mr. Mohamed Rogers, representing the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), emphasized the significance of understanding cultural differences in their duties during his remarks at the opening ceremony.
Madam Fatmata Smith from the WFP expressed gratitude to the SLP for providing the facility and teaching aids to be used throughout the three-week program. She noted that the participants are already experienced drivers who will be trained to meet international standards in UN tactical driving.
"The wheel is not new to you, but the concepts you will learn are crucial in reinforcing your previous training. Attention to detail is vital, as your roles significantly impact our operations," Madam Smith stated.
In his keynote address, AIG Sahr Yomba Senesie acknowledged the essential role of drivers in the operations of UN agencies. He encouraged the trainees to remain vigilant and practice defensive driving while being attuned to their surroundings. AIG Senesie highlighted the paramount importance of safety in every aspect of their driving.
"The knowledge and skills you acquire during this training should not be solely focused on mastering vehicle operation; they are also intended to instill confidence, promote accountability, and ensure that UN drivers serve our communities with the utmost professionalism. Approach this training as a critical step in your ongoing journey of skill development and continuous improvement," AIG Senesie urged.
Following the opening ceremony, Acting Commandant DSP Morality Sesay led the trainers and trainees to the training arena to commence their sessions immediately.
