SLP CONDUCTS TACTICAL DRIVING TRAINING SESSION FOR UN DRIVERS

*Hastings, Freetown - February 13, 2025* - The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in collaboration with the World Food Program (WFP), has officially launched a three-week tactical driving training session for United Nations drivers at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA) in Hastings, Freetown. This initiative stems from Inspector General William Fayia Sellu's commitment to strengthening partnerships with UN agencies dedicated to serving the people of Sierra Leone.

The Head of Training, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alpha Kamara, warmly welcomed both trainers and trainees, underscoring the importance of collaboration as they refine their tactical driving skills, facilitated by the provision of necessary resources and the training facility.

Mr. Mohamed Rogers, representing the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), emphasized the significance of understanding cultural differences in their duties during his remarks at the opening ceremony.

Madam Fatmata Smith from the WFP expressed gratitude to the SLP for providing the facility and teaching aids to be used throughout the three-week program. She noted that the participants are already experienced drivers who will be trained to meet international standards in UN tactical driving.

"The wheel is not new to you, but the concepts you will learn are crucial in reinforcing your previous training. Attention to detail is vital, as your roles significantly impact our operations," Madam Smith stated.

In his keynote address, AIG Sahr Yomba Senesie acknowledged the essential role of drivers in the operations of UN agencies. He encouraged the trainees to remain vigilant and practice defensive driving while being attuned to their surroundings. AIG Senesie highlighted the paramount importance of safety in every aspect of their driving.

"The knowledge and skills you acquire during this training should not be solely focused on mastering vehicle operation; they are also intended to instill confidence, promote accountability, and ensure that UN drivers serve our communities with the utmost professionalism. Approach this training as a critical step in your ongoing journey of skill development and continuous improvement," AIG Senesie urged.

Following the opening ceremony, Acting Commandant DSP Morality Sesay led the trainers and trainees to the training arena to commence their sessions immediately.

SLP POPULARIZES STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR 2025-2029

Kingtom, Sierra Leone โ€“ February 12, 2025 โ€“ The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has conducted a ona-day workshop at the Senior Police Officer's Mess in Kingtom to popularize its Strategic Development Plan (SDP) for the years 2025 to 2029. The workshop aimed at familiarizing senior and superior police officers with key components and objectives of the plan for effective implementation.

As explained by the Director of Corporate Affairs, the SDP aligns with both global and national initiatives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Government of Sierra Leone's Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) and Big Five Game Changers. She said the SDP also outlines how the SLP intends contributing to the achievement of those critical documents.

She continued that established monitoring framework to facilitate ongoing evaluation includes quarterly and annual reporting.

_"This framework ensures a continuous assessment of the SLP's progress throughout the implementation period. The development of the SDP involved a thorough review process and extensive consultations with various stakeholders. The goal of the workshop is to ensure that commanders understand the five Strategic Goals, as well as the specific outcomes and interventions necessary for successful ex*****on",_ she maintained.

The Technical Team lead for the development of the SDP, AIG Sylvester N. Koroma said the engagement was designed to enhance understanding of the framework and how it fits into the broader governance structure of the SLP. He noted that various oversight bodies would be part of the implementation process to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity in police operations.

_"It is crucial for police officers to thoroughly study these documents to ensure effective implementation. As we are currently in the first quarter, we expect commanders to adhere to the templates provided by the Corporate Directorates,"_ emphasized AIG Sylvester.

Commissioner Ishmael Keita further highlighted the significance of the plan, encouraging commanders to identify key areas requiring their intervention and to communicate essential information to their subordinates during parades. _"The SDP serves as a comprehensive blueprint that will guide the SLP in delivering services aligned with our core values,"_ he stated.

Mostly, people tend to reference the TRC report when addressing issues of political importance (*Law Enforcement and Human Rights*) when, in fact, most of them have little or no understanding of the dynamics and the dilemma that revolve around these concepts.

Funnily, in making such references, some usually "implicitly" castigate the legal actions of the police - to ensure sanity prevails at all times.

Let me be clear here, every action of the police is guided by laws and such actions have always been within the ambit of the laws of Sierra Leone. If anyone thinks the laws are bad, there is always room for amendment or repeal. Sadly, that does not fall within the "legal functions" of the police.

During my undergraduate studies, I learnt that "a bad law is always a law until it is amended or repealed". I just decided to tell you one of the concepts I paid to learn at Fourah Bay College.

My conclusion is that, the police is in no way wrong to protect lives and properties from a "foreseen" disaster, mayhem, calamity, chaos, or unrest in the guise of protest that is surreptitious and has no legal backing.

This initiative aligns with the SLP's Strategic Development Goal, which focuses on improving community safety and reducing crime during the yuletide period. By ramping up patrols, the SLP reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe atmosphere for all, allowing citizens to celebrate without fear.

The SLP reassures the community of its dedication to maintaining peace and tranquility in Sierra Leone. It encourages residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods, underscoring that public cooperation is vital in the pursuit of security.

The SLP is determined to ensure that everyone can rest easy during and after the holiday festivities.
