SLP Launches Nationwide Operation to Crack Down on Unauthorised Vehicle Lights

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has commenced a nationwide operation targeting unauthorised and distracting lighting systems installed on vehicles across the country.

Speaking exclusively to SLP Online Television, Commissioner Abdul Moijueh, Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, said the operation is intended to address the increasing use of coloured LED lights, flashing lights, excessively bright headlights and other decorative lighting fitted to vehicles.

Commissioner Moijueh warned that such lights can distract or temporarily blind other road users, especially at night, increasing the likelihood of road traffic crashes and putting motorists, pedestrians and other members of the public at risk.

The Police said the operation is being carried out in accordance with Sections 58 (1), (2), (3), (14) and (16) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2011.

Vehicle owners and drivers are therefore urged to:

Ensure their vehicles are fitted only with standard manufacturer-approved lighting systems and other lights permitted by law.

Avoid the use of flashing, revolving or excessively bright lights, except where such lights are legally authorised for emergency or security vehicles.

Immediately remove unauthorised coloured, decorative and distracting lights from their vehicles.

The SLP has urged motorists and vehicle owners to take the directive seriously, warning that failure to comply could result in enforcement action.

The Police, working alongside the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, are intensifying efforts to improve road safety and protect all categories of road users nationwide.

The SLP is calling on the public to cooperate with the operation and help make Sierra Leone’s roads safer for everyone.

Turkish Government Donates 10 Motorbikes to SLP Through TiKA

Freetown, 12 August 2026 – The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, has received a donation of ten motorbikes from the Turkish Government via the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TiKA), aimed at bolstering the operational capacity of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).

The presentation ceremony took place on Wednesday, with IGP Sellu expressing gratitude to Turkey and TiKA for their ongoing support to the Sierra Leone Police. He highlighted the importance of the donation in enhancing police mobility, which is critical for effective response to security challenges and community policing.

In his remarks, IGP Sellu acknowledged Turkey’s pivotal role in supporting the development of the SLP. He recalled that shortly after his inaugural meeting with Turkish Ambassador His Excellency Yusuf Bukar Rende, Turkey, through TiKA, facilitated a training programme for Sierra Leone Police personnel. He described such interventions as a testament to Turkey’s commitment to the professional development and operational effectiveness of the police force.

The Police Chief assured both the Ambassador and the Turkish Government of the Sierra Leone Police’s full support for ongoing cooperation. He added that the motorbikes would be utilised as intended, to boost mobility and operational efficiency, particularly in areas where rapid movement is essential.

Speaking at the event, Turkish Ambassador Yusuf Bukar Rende reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Sierra Leone. He described the donation as a tangible example of Turkey’s willingness to support Sierra Leone’s security sector, emphasising that the partnership is founded on mutual respect between two sovereign nations.

Ambassador Rende expressed satisfaction with the bilateral relationship and reiterated Turkey’s readiness to explore further avenues of collaboration that would benefit both countries. He also thanked the Sierra Leone Government and police leadership for enabling Turkey’s contribution to the country’s development and security efforts.

The donation of ten motorbikes adds to Turkey’s ongoing support for the SLP, which includes training programmes and institutional development initiatives. The Sierra Leone Police have consistently emphasised the importance of equipping officers with modern tools and logistics to meet emerging security challenges and improve service delivery.

The latest support from TiKA is expected to significantly enhance police mobility, facilitating more rapid and accessible responses to security incidents. It is part of broader efforts to transform the Sierra Leone Police into a more professional and responsive organisation dedicated to serving the public.
