A Call to Join Forces for the Eradication of Drug Trafficking and Addiction in Sierra Leone
Issued by: Sierra Leone Media Educators (SLeME)
Date: July 25, 2025
Fellow Sierra Leoneans, stakeholders, civil society actors, media practitioners, traditional leaders, policymakers, youth groups, educators, and all concerned citizens,
The Sierra Leone Media Educators (SLeME) issues this urgent call to action: it is time for us to unite, rise, and confront the alarming rise of drug trafficking and addiction in our beloved nation.
Drug abuse particularly the spread of Kush, Tramadol, cannabis, and other harmful substances is destroying our youth, tearing apart families, crippling communities, and undermining our national development. Even more worrying is the growing web of drug trafficking networks exploiting our porous borders, limited enforcement capacities, and vulnerable populations.
This crisis is not just a law enforcement problem, it is a public health emergency, a social justice issue, and a moral challenge that demands our collective effort.
SLeME’s Commitment
As media educators and advocates for social change, SLeME pledges to:
• Amplify awareness through targeted media campaigns, especially in vulnerable and underserved communities;
• Educate the public, especially young people, about the dangers of drug abuse;
• Partner with government agencies, civil society, and local leaders to promote sustainable prevention strategies;
• Support media practitioners to report responsibly and ethically on drug-related issues.
We Call On:
1. The Government of Sierra Leone
Strengthen policies, increase investment in rehabilitation and prevention, and ensure strict enforcement against traffickers and enablers.
2. Traditional and Religious Leaders
Use your influence to discourage drug abuse and trafficking in your communities.
3. Teachers and Educators
Incorporate drug prevention education in school curricula and mentor at-risk youth.
4. Parents and Guardians
Engage, guide, and support your children with love, discipline, and vigilance.
5. Civil Society and NGOs
Collaborate, share resources, and expand community-based rehabilitation and counseling services.
6. The Media Community
Do responsibly report on drug issues, amplify positive stories of recovery, and expose the root causes of trafficking and abuse.
7. The Youth of Sierra Leone
To say NO to drugs. Protect your future. Become agents of change.
Conclusion
This fight is not one that a single organization or institution can win alone. We must stand together as one voice, one nation against this menace.
Let history remember that we, the people of Sierra Leone, chose hope over despair, action over apathy, and life over destruction.
Together, we can and must end drug trafficking and addiction.
Join us. Partner with us. Speak out. Act now.
