The management of the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation (BBHF), through the Office of the Executive Director, has announced the appointment of Mr. Mohamed S. Sesay (MSS) as Senior Administrative Officer. His appointment marks another important step in the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its institutional structure and administrative capacity as it continues to expand its community development interventions across Port Loko District. Mr. Sesay joins a dynamic team of young professionals committed to contributing meaningfully to humanity, societal development, and national transformation through practical, community-focused initiatives.

Mr. Mohamed S. Sesay (MSS) is an experienced educator and development-oriented professional who holds a Bachelor’s degree in sociology. He has worked with several organizations over the years, where he has contributed to institutional operations and gained valuable experience that will be relevant to his new responsibilities at BBHF. His academic background in Sociology, combined with his professional experience and understanding of organizational and community dynamics, is expected to bring an additional layer of professionalism, coordination, and administrative discipline to the Foundation’s growing team.

Established in 2018, the Bai Bureh Heritage Foundation is a youth-led community development organization working to contribute to humanity, societal development, and national transformation. Over the years, BBHF has implemented a number of initiatives in education, youth empowerment, skills development, scholarships, agriculture, water and sanitation, community development, and other areas aimed at creating opportunities for vulnerable and underserved communities. The Foundation has continued to emphasize transparency, accountability, community participation, and responsible program implementation while building partnerships with individuals, organizations, institutions, and development-minded stakeholders.

As Senior Administrative Officer, Mr. Sesay is expected to play a key role in strengthening the Foundation’s internal systems and external administrative engagements. ‼️When Power Feels the Pain: A Nation’s Hardship Is Best Understood by Those Who Live in It.

The sad realities in Sierra Leone: If those in positions of power were to experience the same economic hardships, daily struggles, and uncertainties faced by ordinary citizens, they might gain a deeper understanding of what people have been enduring all along. Leadership is not only about occupying offices, making policies, or issuing statements. It is also about understanding the realities of the people those decisions affect. For many ordinary families, the challenges of putting food on the table, paying school fees, accessing healthcare, securing employment, meeting transportation costs, and maintaining a decent standard of living have become part of everyday life. When such realities remain distant from those making decisions, the true weight of hardship can easily be underestimated.

For ordinary citizens, hardship is not a statistic written in a report. It is a mother calculating how to feed her children with limited income, a father struggling to meet household responsibilities, a young graduate searching endlessly for employment, or a patient worrying about the cost of treatment. These experiences are personal, immediate, and often continuous. While those in authority may receive briefings about inflation, unemployment, poverty, and the rising cost of living, citizens experience these issues directly. The difference between hearing about hardship and living through it can be enormous, and that difference matters when policies are being designed and implemented.

There is, therefore, a strong case for leaders to remain connected to the everyday experiences of the people. Effective governance requires more than administrative decisions. It requires listening, observation, empathy, and responsiveness. When public officials understand the difficulties confronting communities, they are better positioned to appreciate why citizens demand affordable basic commodities, reliable public services, employment opportunities, quality healthcare, education, and greater economic security. Leadership should never become so insulated that the realities of ordinary people are visible only through reports and statistics. The closer decision-makers remain to the communities they serve, the greater the opportunity to identify practical solutions to genuine problems.

At the same time, citizens also have a responsibility to participate constructively in national development. Holding leaders accountable should not mean abandoning dialogue, community responsibility, or peaceful civic engagement. Governments, institutions, civil society organizations, journalists, community leaders, and citizens all have roles to play in addressing national challenges. Transparency and accountability can help build public confidence, while responsible public communication can ensure that genuine concerns are not ignored. A society progresses when the experiences of ordinary people become an important part of the national conversation and when institutions respond to those experiences with measurable action.

Ultimately, the strength of any society can be measured not simply by the privileges available to those at the top but by the conditions experienced by people at the grassroots. Those in power may not need to experience every hardship personally to understand it, but they must be willing to listen carefully to those who do. The voices of ordinary citizens should not become important only during elections, public consultations, or moments of crisis. Their daily realities should remain central to governance throughout the entire period of public service. When leadership understands the pain of the people, acknowledges their struggles, and responds with practical action, governance becomes more connected to the society it is meant to serve.
