The worldโ€™s largest hospital ship, Global Mercy, is back in Sierra Leone after a short maintenance break in Spain. For the next 10 months, Mercy Ships will work alongside national and local health authorities to offer free, life-changing surgeries and train local healthcare professionals.

Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby praised the partnership, noting that it not only provides much-needed medical services but also equips Sierra Leoneans with lasting skills in patient care and surgery โ€” a legacy that will benefit the nation for years.

Since 2023, Global Mercy has already carried out over 3,630 free surgeries for more than 3,240 people, while also strengthening the countryโ€™s surgical systems through training and advocacy programs.

In a groundbreaking move to boost education and bridge the digital divide, the Directorate of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), is rolling out Project Giga โ€” a transformative initiative connecting 403 schools across Sierra Leone to high-speed internet, powered by sustainable solar energy.

For the first time, students, teachers, and entire communities โ€” even in the most remote corners of the country โ€” will have free access to the vast world of online learning. With reliable internet and clean, renewable energy, classrooms will no longer be limited to the four walls of a building; they will open to a global library of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity.

This is more than just a technology project โ€” itโ€™s a powerful step in human capital development, equipping the next generation with the tools, skills, and resources to thrive in a digital future.

Sierra Leoneโ€™s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, recently boarded the MV BGP Prospect vessel for a short but significant meeting and on-site inspection. The vessel is set to carry out vital research on the countryโ€™s oil and gas prospects โ€” a project that could reshape the nationโ€™s economic future.

During the visit, Dr. Jalloh was briefed by senior petroleum officials on the scope and potential of the exploration. Mr. Foday, a high-ranking figure in the petroleum sector, revealed that early assessments suggest an estimated 33 tons of oil are under review, with hopes that the final yield could be even greater. He hinted that a more definitive and potentially optimistic figure would be shared once the official results are in.

With global oil prices hovering around $70 per barrel, the stakes are high. If confirmed, this discovery could bring in substantial revenue, create jobs, and open new opportunities for investment โ€” offering a significant boost to Sierra Leoneโ€™s economy.

The research process will involve detailed scanning and data collection, a meticulous operation expected to take roughly eight months. Officials remain optimistic that the findings from the MV BGP Prospect could mark the start of a new chapter in the countryโ€™s natural resource development.
