USMARADIO is the the radio of the University of the Republic of San Marino. A radio station - founded and directed by Roberto Paci Dalò, with the collaboration of Alessandro Renzi together with students and teachers - within the spaces of the Antico Monastero Santa Chiara. USMARADIO (usmaradio.org) has a 24/7 programming with hosts in various places (Europe, USA, China, India, a.o.) that broadcast programs also live through applications that allow to manage micro radio studios hosted by smartphones. Online, on-air, on-site USMARADIO is devoted to Radio Art and transmits everything that does not feel the normal network and on mainstream radio. Students, faculty, and staff all work together in experimenting and creating a meeting place for people of every discipline where art, science and nature are intertwined in daily practice. Designers, artists, scientists, researchers, inventors, hackers, educators, journalists, economists, historians, cartographers, activists. An unusual radio also designed as an exhibition space where exhibitions are regularly presented working on sound in cooperation with local and international structures. USMARADIO is a workplace of The School of Radio / Scuola di Radiofonia to develop an innovative radio pedagogy. Workshops, work sessions, meetings, presentations of live performance as sections of the project. The theory and practice of radio: radio art, sound art, contemporary art, web radio, radio and telematics, network projects, relationship with the text, soundscape, software and hardware, live radio and live media, radio space as a place of performance, the relationship between image and sound, media design. A radio designed for the training of artists, technicians and scientists for the invention of the possible professions the absence so far of places of education, who works on the spread of radio knowledge of its history, its techniques, its (often still unexplored) possibilities in the mediascape of this. USMARADIO supports Creative Commons licenses and the open source philosophy. area of the site is dedicated to free and freely usable downloadable audio materials. A new podcast series by Usmaradio 🎙
How does culture take shape in one of the most remote and fascinating corners of Europe?
What does it mean to create music, poetry, or public radio within an island society?
And how can sound become a tool for connection, preservation, and storytelling?
These questions gave rise to Sounding Faroe, a new podcast series by Usmaradio – Research Centre for Radiophonic Studies, recorded in the Faroe Islands in June 2025, in the days following the NUSCT History Conference (Network of Universities of Small Countries and Territories) in Tórshavn.
At the conference, Usmaradio contributed to the academic dialogue with the paper "The Power of Radio", exploring how radio can serve as a medium for cultural transmission, research, and community engagement in small-scale societies.
Beyond the confines of the conference, this mission expanded: a series of in-depth conversations with key figures in the Faroese cultural landscape was recorded, forming the heart of this sonic journey.
🎧 𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐃𝐄𝐒
The series opens with Kristian Blak — legendary musician, composer, and founder of TUTL, the only record label in the Faroe Islands and a vital hub of local creativity. This first conversation actually took place in Riolunato, a mountain village in northern Italy twinned with Tórshavn, where Kristian has long fostered cultural exchange projects.
In the following episodes:
– Dania O. Tausen, poetic singer and songwriter, shares her thoughts on language, feminism, and expression through slam poetry. We met Dania inside the TUTL record shop in Tórshavn, where she also works.
– Jón Sonni Jensen, a Faroese sculptor with a British education, reflects on his return home and the development of his artistic practice in a place that now offers everything he needs.
– Magni Arge, businessman and political figure, guides us through the studios of Kringvarp Føroya, the national public broadcaster founded by his father, and discusses the evolution of the Faroese language in media.
– Heðin Ziska Davidsen, composer and musician, speaks about collaboration, experimentation, and the meaning of making music within a close-knit community like the Faroe Islands. He also performed live with Usmaradio’s director, Roberto Paci Dalò, at Sirkus, a landmark venue by the Tórshavn harbour during the Summartonar Festival.
– Gunn Hernes, Norwegian-born director of The Nordic House, offers an insightful overview of the islands’ cultural infrastructure. Opened in 1983, The Nordic House is both an architectural landmark and a powerhouse of Nordic and Faroese culture, hosting over 400 multidisciplinary events each year across music, literature, cinema, design, theatre, and more.
🎙 With Sounding Faroe, Usmaradio continues its exploration of how radio can function both as archive and amplifier — inviting us to listen deeply to local knowledge, stories, and soundscapes, and to reflect on how culture moves through territories, no matter how small or “remote”.
