Peter Barchue Cole, known as Tonton Peter, is a Liberian-born artist, musician, composer, and producer currently based in Dakar, Senegal. Originally from Gbarnga, Peter’s life and music have been deeply shaped by the civil unrest in Liberia, which forced him to relocate first to Monrovia and later to the Ivory Coast. While Peter is best known for his skill on the guitar—his instrument of choice—he
is also a talented pianist, vocalist, and arranger. His music is rooted in a deep commitment to social justice, often addressing critical issues such as children’s rights, gender-based violence, and public health. During the Liberian civil war, Peter and his band played a vital role in providing both entertainment and education in the Monrovia enclave. They raised awareness about the plight of street children—many of whom were vulnerable to recruitment as child soldiers. With support from UNICEF and the Don Bosco Homes, Peter taught some of these children how to play musical instruments, offering them a creative alternative to violence and war. This humanitarian work led to a collaboration with Senegalese music legend Youssou Ndour, whom Peter met during the filming of a documentary for the International Committee of the Red Cross. As conflict escalated, Peter fled to the Ivory Coast and was later invited to Senegal by Ndour, who went on to produce Peter’s second album, Stay Alive. Unfortunately, Peter lost all copies of his first album, Be Awake, due to looting during the Liberian war. Peter continues to use music as a platform for advocacy, particularly in the fight against rape and gender-based violence. He has partnered with UNICEF and various NGOs and government agencies to promote awareness about health issues such as polio and malaria in Liberia. He has released two additional albums, Rebirth and Nefertitus, and is currently working on his fifth project. https://www.youtube.com/c/petercolemusic
