President Barrow holds talks with BADEA AND ISDB on infrastructure and investment

President Adama Barrow has held bilateral talks with representatives of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) on the sidelines of the inauguration of Lot 2 of the University of The Gambia’s Faraba Banta campus.

The discussions focused on infrastructure development and key investment challenges affecting the Gambian population, as well as ways to further strengthen the long-standing partnership between the government and the two financial institutions.

President Barrow expressed appreciation to BADEA and the IsDB for their continued support to The Gambia, describing infrastructure as a critical pillar for national development and a key driver in the country’s ambition to attain middle-income status.

He also thanked BADEA for its Trade Financing Facility, which he said has helped stabilise the prices of essential commodities and reduce pressure on citizens.

The President called for sustained and increased support from the bank to consolidate these gains and enhance economic resilience.

President Barrow outlined his vision for the country’s future and urged both institutions to deepen their engagement and investment in transformative projects aimed at accelerating growth and improving livelihoods across The Gambia.

Jinack Kajatta leaders deny taking money from migrant boat operators

Community leaders in Jinack Kajatta village have rejected allegations that they collect money from migrant boats departing from the island, describing the claims as false and damaging to the community’s reputation.

The Village Development Committee (VDC) said it had “never received a single dalasi” from any migrant boat, dismissing reports that it collaborates with smugglers and charges up to D100,000 for every boat leaving Jinack Island.

The committee said it has consistently opposed irregular migration and the use of the village’s coastline as a departure point for dangerous journeys across the Atlantic.

“From the very beginning, the VDC, together with the Alkalo and community elders, made its position clear against irregular migration,” the statement said, adding that this stance has long been known both within and outside the community.

Jinack Island, like several coastal communities in The Gambia, has faced growing scrutiny over its role in irregular migration, following repeated reports of migrant departures from the area.

The VDC said it has no interest in supporting activities that violate Gambian law and stressed its responsibility to safeguard the safety and integrity of the village.

Despite limited manpower and resources, the committee said it has been working with community elders to address challenges linked to irregular migration, while promoting lawful and sustainable community development.

The VDC warned that what it called “misleading narratives” could undermine community efforts and unfairly tarnish the image of Jinack Kajatta.

Community leaders said they remain open to engagement with authorities and the public to clarify their position and support national efforts to combat irregular migration.

GID Intake 10B celebrates 20 years, donates to department leadership

Members of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) Intake 10B marked two decades since their enlistment in 2005 with a series of celebrations at Sunbird Beach Resort in Senegambia.

The annual general meeting brought together current and former officers, including Director General Ebrima Mboob, Commissioner Hatab Bojang, and other senior officials.

The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and growth of the intake over the past 20 years.

Assistant Superintendent of Immigration Aminata Jammeh, who presided over the event, commended members for their dedication to the association and their ongoing contributions to the development of the department.

A significant highlight of the event was the donation of a laptop and printer to the GID leadership.

The gesture symbolizes Intake 10B’s commitment not only to celebrating their shared history but also to supporting the strategic work of the department.

Members described the donations as a demonstration of their sense of duty, solidarity, and continued engagement with the GID.

The anniversary also featured speeches, networking sessions, and reflections from members on their professional journeys.

Many highlighted how the intake has fostered camaraderie, mentorship, and professional growth, reinforcing the bonds that have lasted for two decades.

The celebrations concluded with a commitment from members to continue supporting GID initiatives and to uphold the values of service and professionalism that have guided them since their enlistment.

Gambia school feeding programme reaches over 328,000 pupils in 2025

The Gambian government has said that more than 328,000 pupils benefited from school feeding programmes in 2025 as part of efforts to improve education outcomes and child nutrition.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education says the programme, implemented with support from the World Food Programme, Catholic Relief Services and Action Against Hunger, reached 328,260 students in 823 schools across the country.

Officials said the initiative builds on the Home-Grown School Feeding programme, which sources food locally and has contributed to improved nutrition, higher school attendance and better retention rates, particularly among vulnerable children.

The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Habibatou Drammeh, said school feeding plays a critical role in keeping children in school.

“School feeding is not just about nutrition; it is a powerful tool to keep children in school,” she said, adding that the government spent 166 million dalasis on the programme in 2025 and plans to expand it further.

In addition to providing meals, the government says it has constructed and renovated standard school kitchens in partnership with development partners, aimed at improving hygiene and the quality of food served.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said the programme forms part of broader efforts to strengthen basic and secondary education, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

WoJAG and GPU lead national dialogue on safety of female journalists

The Women Journalists Association of The Gambia (WoJAG), in partnership with the Gambia Press Union (GPU) and UNESCO, on sunday concluded a three-month safety project with a high-level multi-stakeholder symposium focused on the safety and security of female journalists.

The symposium brought together political leaders, civil society organisations, legal experts and media practitioners to examine the growing risks faced by women working in the media sector.

Discussions centred on assaults against female journalists and the culture of impunity, newsroom safety, online harassment, and the legal challenges confronting women journalists in the course of their work.

Representatives from the Female Lawyers Association, WoJAG and the GPU led sessions analysing existing laws and institutional gaps, as well as strategies to strengthen protection mechanisms.

Organisers said female journalists are increasingly exposed to physical threats, online abuse and workplace harassment, challenges they say undermine press freedom and women’s participation in public discourse.

The event also marked the transition to the next phase of the project, which includes specialised training for women journalists in both print and broadcast media on physical and digital safety.

Separate training sessions are planned for media owners and managers, focusing on preventing sexual exploitation and abuse within media institutions.

WoJAG and the GPU say the initiative is aimed at promoting safer, more inclusive and accountable media spaces, while encouraging stronger collaboration between journalists, policymakers and civil society to protect women in the profession.

UNESCO, which supported the project, said improving the safety of journalists, particularly women, is critical to strengthening democratic governance and freedom of expression in The Gambia.

Ecobank Gambia donates D1.5m to support completion of Salagie police station

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has received a D1.5 million donation from Ecobank Gambia to support the completion of the Salagie Police Station, as part of efforts to improve police infrastructure and strengthen security services at the community level.

The donation was presented on Monday, 22 December 2025, at Police Headquarters in Banjul.

The cheque was received by the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Administration, Ebrima Bah, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mukhtar Touray.

Presenting the cheque, Ecobank Gambia’s Managing Director, John Nyaaba, said the contribution was part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility programme.

He stressed that peace and security are essential for sustainable economic growth and business development.

Mr Nyaaba said that by supporting policing infrastructure, Ecobank aims to contribute to stability and safety, which allow communities and businesses to operate in a secure environment.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, AIG Ebrima Bah thanked Ecobank Gambia for what he described as timely and meaningful support.

He said the donation reflects the strong and longstanding partnership between the Gambia Police Force and the bank.

He noted that Ecobank has previously supported the police and expressed confidence that the relationship would continue in ways that promote national security and development.

AIG Bah said the completion of the Salagie Police Station would enhance police presence in the area, improve service delivery, and support crime prevention efforts within the community.

The donation highlights the growing role of private-sector institutions in complementing government efforts to expand security infrastructure and strengthen public safety across the country.

Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Form Joint Military Force to Combat Islamist Insurgencies

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have announced the formation of a joint military force aimed at tackling Islamist insurgencies in the volatile Sahel region.

The newly established force, known as FU-AES, is expected to comprise approximately 5,000 troops and will coordinate operations across air, intelligence, and ground domains along the countries’ shared borders.

Gambian Lawyer Ousman Sillah dies at his Bakau home

The Gambian legal community is mourning the death of veteran lawyer Ousman Sillah, who passed away on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, at his residence in Bakau.

Family members announced that funeral prayers (Firdaus) will be held at the Pipeline Mosque, followed by interment at the Old Jeshwang Muslim Cemetery.

Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues and clients, describing Sillah as a dedicated legal practitioner whose work left a lasting impact on the Gambian justice system.

“His dedication to the law and commitment to his clients will always be remembered,” his family said.

Family members have requested prayers for the late lawyer, invoking the Islamic supplication, “May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdausi. Ameen.”

Sillah’s passing marks a significant loss for The Gambia’s legal fraternity, which continues to honour his contributions and legacy.
