The Assab Question: Why Ethiopia’s Red Sea Ambitions Matter

Ethiopia’s growing push for reliable access to the Red Sea is raising new strategic questions across the Horn of Africa.

In this analysis, Abdillahi Jama Ali – Qurus examines the emerging connection between:

🇪🇹 Ethiopia’s demand for sea access
🇪🇷 Eritrea’s sovereignty over Assab
🇺🇸 Growing U.S.–Ethiopia security cooperation
🇪🇬 Egypt’s concerns over the Red Sea balance
🇸🇴 Somalia’s strategic role
🇸🇱 Somaliland and Berbera’s position on the Gulf of Aden
🌊 The growing importance of the Bab el-Mandeb

The key question is not simply whether Washington is strengthening Ethiopia militarily. The bigger question is what kind of security architecture the United States is helping to build around the Bab el-Mandeb — and what role Ethiopia could play in it.

There is no evidence that the United States is preparing Ethiopia to seize Assab, but the convergence of Ethiopia’s maritime ambitions, U.S. security interests and growing regional competition deserves close attention.
