Why Berbera Matters: Trade, Security, and the New Geopolitics of the Red Sea

At the Crossroads of Global Trade:

On Somaliland’s northern coast, Berbera sits where the Gulf of Aden meets the wider Red Sea and western Indian Ocean system. Its importance comes from an unusual combination: a modernizing port, a long airport runway, proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and access to markets in the Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula. Together, these assets are turning a once-overlooked city into a strategic node for trade, logistics, and security hub.

A Port-and-Airport Advantage:

DP World’s investment has expanded Berbera Port into a modern container and logistics facility. For landlocked Ethiopia, it offers a potential alternative gateway to the sea; for Gulf and international traders, it could become a corridor linking inland East Africa with global shipping routes. That commercial role also creates infrastructure that may support maritime surveillance, emergency response, and regional security operations.

The airport strengthens that advantage. Its roughly four-kilometre runway—built with Soviet assistance during the Cold War and later associated with emergency landing plans for the U.S. Space Shuttle—can accommodate long-range transport aircraft. With more recent infrastructure investment, the site could support maritime patrols, humanitarian flights, disaster relief, and logistics. Few locations pair a capable port and strategic runway so close to a major maritime chokepoint.

Why the Shipping Lane Matters:

The Gulf of Aden and Bab el-Mandeb constitute a strategic maritime corridor linking Asia, the Middle East, and Europe through the Red Sea and Suez Canal. Diversions around the Cape of Good Hope substantially lengthen voyages and raise costs through increased fuel consumption, insurance premiums, and freight rates. Disruptions along this corridor therefore generate rapid and far-reaching effects across global supply chains.

Recent Houthi advance and attacks on commercial vessels have shown how missiles, drones, and other asymmetric tools can threaten shipping far beyond the immediate conflict zone. Renewed Somali piracy adds another layer of risk. Both trends underline the need for early warning, maritime-domain awareness, es**rt capacity, and resilient ports and airfields. Berbera’s location makes it relevant to each of those needs.

The Gwadar Port Comparison:

Berbera is sometimes compared with Gwadar in Pakistan, where China has invested through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative. The two ports differ in politics, context, scale, connectivity, and geography, so Berbera should not be treated as an African equivalent. Still, the comparison is useful: both show how commercial infrastructure can shape access, surveillance, logistics, and long-term stratigic influence along the Indian Ocean’s maritime approaches. For India and the United States, China’s expanding overseas infrastructure network raises questions about strategic access and potentail dual-use capabilities.

The Opportunity for Washington and New Delhi:

For Washington, Berbera could complement—not replace—existing partnerships in the Horn of Africa. It could provide another location for monitoring the Gulf of Aden, Bab el-Mandeb, and western Indian Ocean, while supporting logistics, humanitarian missions, evacuation planning, and emergency response. Somaliland’s generally pro-Western orientation may make practical cooperation easier, although its unresolved international status requires careful diplomacy.
For India, cooperation around Berbera could reinforce its western Indian Ocean strategy. Benefits could include better maritime awareness, stronger anti-piracy coordination, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and new commercial links with East Africa. It could also give New Delhi a useful vantage point west of the Arabian Sea without mirroring China’s model at Gwadar.

A Pragmatic Partnership:

A sensible approach would begin with sustained diplomatic engagement, commercial investment, coastguard and anti-piracy cooperation, information sharing, and agreements for humanitarian or logistical access. Joint exercises and infrastructure support could test what works before larger commitments are considered. Such a phased strategy would improve regional resilience while respecting political sensitivities around Somaliland’s status.
Berbera is more than a port. Its infrastructure and geography place it at the intersection of trade, security, and geopolitical competition. For Somaliland, it is a development opportunity. For global shipping, it is a potential source of resilience. For the United States and India, it offers a chance to build a measured partnership in one of the world’s most consequential maritime regions.

Unlocking Investment in Somaliland: From Potential to Bankable Opportunity!

How resources, reform, security, and partnerships can turn strategic advantages into Sustainable growth.

Somaliland has reached an important moment in its economic and diplomatic journey. Since reasserting its independence in 1991, it has built political institutions, maintained relative stability, and expanded regional and international engagement. Its location on the Gulf of Aden, close to major shipping routes, gives it strategic value, while its livestock, agriculture, fisheries, minerals, renewable energy, and tourism assets offer a broad base for growth.
Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland on 26 December 2025 created a new diplomatic opening. Yet recognition itself will not deliver prosperity. The real test is whether Somaliland can convert greater visibility into credible projects, responsible investment, stronger institutions, and jobs. That requires moving from resource potential to opportunities that investors can assess, finance, and implement.

Turn Inland Resources into Value Chains

Livestock remains one of Somaliland’s strongest economic assets, but exporting live animals captures only part of its value. Investment in meat processing, dairy production, leather and hides, animal feed, veterinary services, and cold-chain logistics could create more jobs and retain more income at home. Agriculture offers similar possibilities through irrigation, improving water management, climate-resilient farming, horticulture, fodder production, and agro-processing. Strategic investment in infrastructure, technology, finance, and climate resilience could increase domestic production, strengthen rural livelihoods, expand exports, and create youth employment.

Oil, gas, and mineral prospects could add another layer of growth, but commercial claims must be supported by independent exploration, geological mapping, and transparent data. Previous seismic and seepage studies have identified promising petroleum structures, while also reported deposits include Gemstones, Gypsum, Lead, Beryllium, Columbite, Tin, Tungsten, Copper, Gold, and rare-earth elements. Clear licensing rules and environmental safeguards will be essential before these resources can attract long-term capital.

Solar and wind energy, groundwater, rangelands, and tourism also deserve attention. Cultural sites such as Laas Geel with its exceptional prehistoric rock art, and the landscapes of Ga’an Libah and Daallo could support carefully managed cultural, ecological, and adventure tourism. Across these sectors, success will depend on infrastructure, local skills, community participation, and credible resource assessments.

Build a Sustainable Blue Economy

Somaliland’s coastline creates opportunities in fisheries, seafood processing, aquaculture, salt production, port services, logistics, coastal tourism, and marine energy. Its position near global shipping lanes strengthens the case for investment in maritime trade and the Berbera corridor.
However, the blue economy remains constrained by limited cold storage, processing capacity, fisheries data, monitoring, finance, and technology. The priority should be to move beyond raw exports toward sustainable, value-added industries. Better landing facilities, quality standards, marine-resource governance, and maritime security would strengthen domestic supply chains while protecting coastal ecosystems.

Make the Investment Climate Predictable

Investors need more than opportunity; they need confidence. Somaliland can reduce risk through clear regulations, efficient licensing, investor protections, transparent procurement, and credible dispute resolution. Public agencies must also be able to prepare projects, evaluate partners, enforce standards, and communicate consistently.
Traditional leaders can help bridge national policy and local implementation. Their constructive participation can support land access, community consultation, social stability, and project security. Integrating them into transparent investment processes—while maintaining clear legal accountability—can improve public trust and reduce delays.

Connect Projects to Global Capital

Modern banking and stronger financial regulation are central to deeper economic integration. Expanding access to international payments, trade finance, and correspondent banking would lower transaction costs and make investment easier. Compliance with global standards, accurate financial reporting, and greater transparency can also improve confidence among banks, insurers, and development partners.
Most importantly, Somaliland should present a pipeline of bankable projects in infrastructure, energy, logistics, agriculture, mining, fisheries, and tourism. Each project should have a clear business model, feasibility data, risk allocation, environmental and social safeguards, and an implementation timetable. Public-private partnerships can help deliver large projects, but only when contracts are transparent and public interests are protected.

From Recognition to Results

Somaliland’s opportunity is real, but resources and recognition are only starting points. Economic transformation will come from disciplined ex*****on: stronger institutions, secure and responsible development, skilled people, and projects designed for investment. The goal should be simple—turn recognition into investment, investment into productive capacity, and productive capacity into broad-based, sustainable prosperity.

Aqoonyahan Mustafe Sharmaake oo Bulshada U Iftiimiyay Dagaalka siyaasadeed Ee Madaxwayne Cirro Iyo Gudoomiye xirsi Kula Jiraan Reer Gabiley!!

Waxan baadhitaano ku sameeyay sababta ay Cirro iyo Xirsi ula dagaalamayaan Jibriil Abokor. Arrinta oo dhammaystiran waan soo gudbin doonaa oo caddaymaheedii wadata!

Sidoo, kale arrintan ay hawgabka ku sheegeen waxa meesha lagaga nadiifiyay beesha Subeer Awal. Sida caalamiga ahna, kolka degmo ay cidi hawlgabto, isla degmada uu shaqaalaha noqday hawlgabku joogay, ayuunbaa booska banaan soo buuxsata. Wali ma aynu maqal "Shaqaalihii Gabiley ee hawlgabay waxanu booskoodii keenaynaa cid aan reer Gabiley ahayn" cid dublamaasiyad u arki karta.

Si guud, dhammaan dadka reer Gabiley, ee ka tirsan xisbiga Nabad iyo Nolol ee Xirsi iyo Cirro, waa kondhomyo ayna waxba isaga tirin Xirsi iyo Cirro. Waxana caddayn u ah saddex qodob:

Kow, maalmo dhawayd oo yar yar reer Gabiley ahi ay sheegeen inay shirayaan. Waxa ku baxay lacago aad u adag. Waxan la hawlgeliyay qofaf badan oo yar yarka dejinaayay. Gabadha wasiirka ah ee metesha deegaanka ayaa inta Xirsi uu cararay uu SagalJet ka soo daabacay warqad ay ku soo qoreen "Shahaado Sharaf" Cirro oo gurigiisa iska soo jooga ayaa "guddoonsii inanta" lagu yidhi iyada oo looga dan leeyahay in la tuso "wasiirka qudha ee shaqo shahaado sharaf ku helay, waa inanta Gabiley metesha" se dadku caqli ma laha. Iyada daaye xataa Cirro ayaan waxba qaban.

Laba, Xamse Khayrre oo dabcan ku khasban cidda uu la socdo inuu la mid noqdo. Ayaa guri yar oo uu malahaa dhisanaayay ay Xirsi iyo Cirro suuqa soo geliyeen si ay u yidhaahdaan "Sacad Muusow idinkuba waxbaad dhacdaaan" Xamse ma fahansana.

Saddex, Sultan Ismaaciil oo sheegta Suldaanka Jibriil Abokor ayay yarkii Ciise ee Diridhaba joogay u direen. Odayga Suldaanku, ma oga in Itoobiya ay Ina Cirro iyo xukuumadda Xirsi ee Nabad iyo Nolol ay xidhiidhka u jartay, cidda dagaalka ku waddaana ay tahay Itoobiya. Xataa laba sanno ayaa laga diidan yahay in safiir laga aqbalo. Mashaakilkan haddii xukuumaddu ay daacad ka tahay, mar h**e ayay dhammaan lahayd, keliya Itoobiya ayaa lala heshiin lahaa. Itoobiya cidda u diidan Cirro iyo Xirsi waa Masar iyo Xasan Sheekh.
