China has approved the construction of what will be the world's largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, home to the world's deepest canyon with a vertical drop of 7,667 meters (25,154 feet).

The project aims to generate 300 billion kWh of electricity annually, enough to power 300 million people.

With a budget of one trillion yuan (US$137 billion), it will be the most ambitious infrastructure project ever undertaken.

However, the site’s location near a tectonic plate boundary and its unique geology pose significant challenges, including earthquake risks.
