Somalia kills Al-Shabaab mastermind behind attack on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), working closely with international partners, has announced the killing of a senior Al-Shabaab commander who was behind an assassination attempt on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud earlier this year. The militant, identified as Mohamed Abdi Dhiblaawe Afrah, was taken down in a joint security operation in Ugunji, a town in the Lower Shabelle region. Afrah was not only a key figure within Al-Shabaab but also a man who operated under multiple identities, including Khalid Dheere, Khalid Dacas, Macallin Siciid, Timo-jilac, and Mohamed Sahal. Authorities described him as a dangerous mastermind whose operations had led to the deaths and injuries of countless Somalis, both government officials and ordinary civilians.

Israel Strikes Hamas Officials in Doha, Shaking Ceasefire Hopes

Israel confirmed on Tuesday that it launched an airstrike in Doha targeting senior Hamas officials, just as the group was reviewing a new U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. The attack was highly unusual, as it took place on the soil of Qatar, a close U.S. ally that has played a key role in peace mediation. The strike risks derailing ongoing negotiations and has triggered widespread condemnation.

Puntland Rejects Somalia’s New E-Visa System, Escalating Federal Tensions.

Puntland has strongly opposed the Federal Government of Somalia’s newly introduced electronic visa system, arguing that Mogadishu has gone beyond its mandate by trying to control travel and entry into regional territories. The dispute adds another layer of tension to the already strained relationship between the federal government and the semi-autonomous state.

Somali President Calls for Urgent Climate Finance to Support Africa’s Vulnerable Nations

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called on the international community to take stronger action in providing climate finance to Africa, saying that the continent’s development cannot be separated from global decarbonization efforts. Speaking at the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, he stressed that countries like Somalia are among the most vulnerable to climate change, despite contributing very little to global emissions. He noted that Somalia has already experienced the devastating effects of climate change, such as the prolonged drought from 2021 to 2023 that left 7.8 million people — almost half of the population — in dire conditions. The drought led to severe food shortages, displacement of families, and loss of livelihoods, showing how climate shocks directly threaten survival and stability in the country.
