Flights to northern Ethiopia cancelled as fears mount of renewed conflict

Passenger flights between Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, and cities in the northern Tigray region have been cancelled amid fears of a return to conflict, with reports of clashes in one area

Ethiopia Airlines, which operates all routes in the country, sent passengers a text message about the cancellations citing "unplanned circumstances". Neither the airline nor the government has commented further

Addressing the UNSC, Somalia’s UN ambassador, Abukar Dahir Osman, implored members to firmly reject Israel’s “act of aggression”, which he said not only threatened to fragment Somalia but also to destabilise the wider Horn of Africa and the Red Sea regions

In particular, Osman said that Somalia was concerned the move could be aimed at advancing Israel’s plans to forcibly “relocate the Palestinian population from Gaza to the northwestern region of Somalia”

“This utter disdain for law and morality must be stopped now,” he said

Trump says not ready to follow Israel recognizing Somaliland: Report

US President Donald Trump said Friday he did not intend to immediately follow Israel in recognizing Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent country.

“Everything is under study ... We’ll study it. I study a lot of things and always make great decisions and they turn out to be correct,” Trump told the New York Post in a phone interview.

“Does anyone know what Somaliland is, really?” he asked.

Israel on Friday became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland’s separation from Somalia, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would convey the development to Trump during a planned meeting scheduled for Monday.

Leulseged Tadese, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Brazil, expressed Ethiopia’s concern over the inclusivity of cooperation on the Red Sea.

Abiy Ahmed visits Mogadishu while AS launches mortar attack

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh welcomed Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu ,the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s delegation was escorted to the Presidential Palace, where the leaders of the two countries will hold bilateral talks.

Before the plane carrying Prime Minister Abiy landed, mortar shells were heard hitting the area around the airport, but security forces have not yet released any information

Security in the city has been tightened, many roads have been closed, and domestic and some international flights have been suspended, with the exception of Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines.
