Mogadishu — Somalia’s Council of Ministers held an extraordinary meeting chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to review national security, recent military gains against extremist groups, and the successful local council elections held in Mogadishu on December 25, 2025.

The President praised the elections as a historic milestone and briefed the Cabinet on diplomatic efforts to defend Somalia’s sovereignty, urging unity and collective responsibility.

The Cabinet approved two Memoranda of Understanding with Uganda on security cooperation and Saudi Arabia on maritime transport, and endorsed several key laws and policies, including the Evidence Bill, maritime training standards, data protection regulations, and the National Disability Policy.

Ministers also received updates on preparations for oil production and the country’s ongoing drought response from the Ministry of Petroleum and SODMA.

New York — The Federal Government of Somalia has officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic re-engagement on the global stage.

Somalia will chair the Council throughout the month, presiding over key deliberations related to international peace and security, and guiding discussions on some of the world’s most pressing geopolitical challenges.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Somalia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations described the role as a historic opportunity to demonstrate the country’s readiness to exercise constructive leadership and responsible global engagement.

“This presidency reflects Somalia’s growing diplomatic stature and its renewed contribution to international decision-making,” Somali officials said, noting that the position allows the country to actively shape global security conversations.

The presidency of the UN Security Council rotates monthly among its member states. Somalia’s assumption of the role, its first in decades, is widely seen as a symbol of the country’s recovery, improving stability, and strengthened international relations following years of conflict and isolation.

Diplomats say Somalia’s leadership of the Council underscores its transition from a security concern to a partner in promoting peace and multilateral cooperation, both within the Horn of Africa and beyond.

Mogadishu — Members of Somalia’s Federal Parliament originating from Somaliland and currently based in Mogadishu have issued a political statement addressing the growing dispute between the Federal Government of Somalia and Somaliland, while refraining from condemning Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland.

In a joint position, the lawmakers openly voiced support for Somaliland’s political stance, arguing that the ongoing tensions reflect long-standing grievances rooted in Somalia’s post-independence governance structure. They emphasized that the crisis cannot be resolved through unilateral actions or political pressure.

The lawmakers rejected narratives framing Somalia’s future solely around a centralized “North–South” power struggle, warning that current political approaches risk deepening divisions rather than fostering national unity.

They accused successive federal administrations of marginalizing Somaliland’s political vision for more than two decades, claiming that governance in southern Somalia has been dominated by competition over presidential and prime ministerial power rather than a genuine commitment to unity.

According to the lawmakers, meaningful dialogue between northern and southern leaders remains the only viable path toward a sustainable political settlement.

Key Points Raised by the Lawmakers

The Somaliland-origin MPs outlined several principles they say should guide any future negotiations:

• They reaffirmed their presence in Mogadishu as a commitment to Somali unity, stating that national interest lies in the collective cohesion of the Somali people.

• They noted that the Somali Republic formed on 1 July 1960 through the union of two sovereign entities Somaliland and Somalia and argued that any reconciliation must revisit and redefine that foundational agreement.

• They urged leaders on both sides to halt inflammatory rhetoric, warning that hate speech risks irreversible social fragmentation.

• They stressed that the rights and historical grievances of Somaliland’s population should not be dismissed or denied.

• They cautioned against the religionization of political disputes, warning that extremist groups could exploit such divisions, making resolution more difficult.

• They called on the Federal Government to avoid punitive measures affecting the economy, security, and freedom of movement of Somaliland residents, arguing that unity cannot be imposed by force.

• They urged the Somaliland authorities to return to the negotiation table to pursue a lasting and mutually acceptable settlement.

• The statement comes at a time of heightened political strain between Mogadishu and Hargeisa, compounded by regional and international developments that have further polarized the debate over Somalia’s unity and governance framework.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has raised serious concerns over a reported agreement between Somaliland and Israel, warning that the deal could pose significant security risks to the Horn of Africa and beyond.

Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, President Mohamud said Somalia has obtained intelligence indicating that Somaliland accepted three major conditions allegedly demanded by Israel in exchange for diplomatic recognition.

The Somali leader, who is currently on a diplomatic tour seeking international support for Somalia’s position, is in Turkey after holding consultations in Djibouti, according to the presidency.

“The information available to us points to three key conditions that were agreed upon,” President Mohamud told Al Jazeera. “The first is the relocation of Palestinians to Somaliland; the second is the establishment of an Israeli military base along the Gulf of Aden; and the third is Somaliland’s inclusion in the Abraham Accords.”

He warned that the implementation of such arrangements would represent a serious threat to regional and international security, particularly given the Horn of Africa’s strategic location along key global maritime routes.

“If these three conditions are implemented, they would open the door to new crises for Somalia and trigger instability across the region,” the president said.

President Mohamud emphasized that Somalia firmly rejects Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing it as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles that are widely upheld by the African Union, the United Nations, and international law.

Mogadishu — Thousands of residents in Somalia’s capital staged a large demonstration last night at the Taleh intersection in Hodan district, protesting Israel’s announcement recognizing Somaliland as an independent entity.

The protest drew a broad cross-section of society, including youth, women, artists, and social media influencers, who filled the area chanting slogans in defense of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Demonstrators strongly condemned what they described as Israel’s violation of Somalia’s national sovereignty, expressing anger and frustration over the move, which they say undermines the unity of the country.

Mogadishu residents, long known for their vocal defense of Somalia’s national unity, said the decision represented a direct affront to the Somali people, particularly at a time of heightened regional tension.

Several prominent Somali social media figures took part in the protest, pledging to continue mobilizing public demonstrations against Israel’s actions.

“When Somalia’s sovereignty is at stake, there is no room for compromise. We will continue this uprising against Israel’s aggression,” said Baana Boy, a popular TikTok personality who addressed the crowd.

Women also played a visible role in the demonstration, voicing strong support for the federal government’s stance.

“We are here in the capital, Mogadishu, united in rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. As a Muslim nation, we reject Israel’s interference and its agenda,” said Madam Sahro, one of the participants.

Public anger has intensified since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that Israel would recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state — a move firmly rejected by the Federal Government of Somalia and widely opposed by Somali citizens across the country.

The protest reflects growing public resistance to the controversial decision, with demonstrators warning that further actions would deepen political tensions in the Horn of Africa.

Mogadishu — As part of ongoing national consultations, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired a high-level meeting at the Presidential Palace with several leaders of the country’s Federal Member States yesterday night to discuss emerging political and security developments affecting the nation.

The meeting focused primarily on safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity, amid what officials described as growing external challenges. The talks were attended by the presidents of Galmudug, HirShabelle, South West State, North East State, as well as the Governor of Banadir Region.

During the discussions, President Hassan Sheikh briefed the regional leaders on his government’s strategy to counter what Somalia views as violations against the Somali state and its people, allegedly committed by the Prime Minister of Israel. He emphasized that the Federal Government, in close coordination with the Somali public, is pursuing robust diplomatic and legal measures in line with international law to defend the country’s sovereignty.

For their part, the leaders of South West State, Galmudug, HirShabelle, North East State, and the Governor of Banadir reaffirmed their firm commitment to defending Somalia’s unity and social cohesion. They stressed that Somaliland remains an integral part of the territory and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia, cautioning that any unilateral actions concerning its status could trigger serious security repercussions for the wider Horn of Africa region.

The regional leaders also expressed full support for the President’s ongoing domestic and international diplomatic efforts, aimed at preventing foreign interference and preserving Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The administrations reiterated their earlier positions condemning Israel’s claimed recognition of Somaliland, a move that has sparked diplomatic tensions across the region and drawn widespread international attention.

Notably absent from the meeting were Jubbaland and Puntland, both of which remain locked in a prolonged political dispute with the Federal Government. Speaking in an interview with Al Jazeera, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said Israel should instead have recognized the State of Palestine, rather than taking what he described as a controversial step likely to fuel fresh tensions and instability in the region.

The Prime Minister stressed that both the Federal Government and the Somali people categorically reject Israel’s claimed recognition of Somaliland, emphasizing that the move has no legal basis under international law.

“This action represents a direct assault on the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Prime Minister Hamza said, reiterating that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia under internationally recognized borders.

The Somali government warned that unilateral actions of this nature undermine established international norms and risk exacerbating political and security challenges across the Horn of Africa.

The leaders underscored the importance of preserving internationally recognized borders, warning that unilateral actions of this nature risk destabilizing the wider region.

Mogadishu — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held late-night phone conversations with senior members of the National Salvation Forum and former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, discussing what officials described as a sensitive national issue related to Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland.

According to informed sources, the President emphasized the importance of adopting a unified national position, urging opposition leaders to fully support the Federal Government’s stance on the matter, which he said directly affects Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The President also extended an invitation to members of the National Salvation Forum currently in Mogadishu to attend a face-to-face meeting at the Presidential Palace, aimed at discussing the issue in depth, along with other matters critical to the country’s future.

The outreach comes despite recent tensions between the President and the opposition. On December 24, President Hassan Sheikh publicly criticized members of the National Salvation Forum, describing them as politicians who, in his words, “have failed to add meaningful value to national progress and have held society back.”

Sources familiar with the discussions said members of the National Salvation Forum are expected to decide later today on their official response to the President’s invitation, with indications that the meeting is likely to go ahead. However, internal debate reportedly continues over the agenda of the talks, particularly whether broader national issues should take precedence over the specific issue that prompted the call.

The developing engagement is being closely watched by political observers, who say it could have a significant impact on Somalia’s fragile political landscape and shape the country’s response to sensitive international decisions affecting its sovereignty.
