SWJO Chairperson, Farhia Kheyre proudly represented us during Peace Week in South West State (KGS) — a week-long celebration of peace, development, and social cohesion.
Throughout the week, Farhia joined diverse events that placed women’s voices and leadership at the center:
At the Business & Local Product Exhibition, she met talented young women artisans who showcased creative hand-made products, including beautifully crafted handbags. To encourage their creativity and productivity, she purchased items as a show of support.
At the Baydhabo Book Fair, Farhia explored a rich collection of books on knowledge and development. She was especially inspired by the book “Protect Your Mind”, which she purchased, stressing how access to knowledge is vital for building resilient and peace-oriented communities.
In the Women & Peacebuilding and Women & Social Media sessions, Farhia advocated for women’s central role in shaping peace and using digital platforms to promote positive narratives and mutual respect.

She also facilitated an academic panel on language and culture, highlighting the importance of preserving the Somali language — especially the Maay dialect — through media.
Finally, she participated in the launch of the National Academy of Maay Culture and Sciences, a landmark institution dedicated to promoting Maay language, culture, history, and scientific research.
Her message was clear: “There can be no sustainable peace without women’s leadership and voices at the center.”

After three transformative days of dialogue, practice, and reflection, the workshop on Enhancing Gender Balance in Media Content officially concluded today in Kismaayo — an effort led by SWJO in partnership with IMS (International Media Support)
Journalists, producers, and news anchors explored the daily choices that shape gender narratives — from inclusive sourcing to breaking newsroom norms that sideline women. Conversations didn’t shy away from reality: structural barriers, social expectations, and pressures of breaking news were all on the table.
Yet, there was also clear energy for change.

The path forward: more original reporting by women, fairer story assignments, inclusive sourcing in every program, and newsroom cultures that recognize talent over tradition.
A heartfelt thanks to IMS for continued support and to all participants who brought critical insight and commitment to the table.

Wariyeyaal, soo-saareyaal, iyo akhriyayaal war oo isugu jiraha Wiilal Iyo gabdho ayaa si furan uga dooday caqabadaha horyaalla haweenka saxaafadda — laga bilaabo xulashada ilaha wararka ilaa Iyo sida loo qeybiyo sheekooyinka goobta laga soo tebiyo.
Inkastoo la isku raacay in caqabado muuqda ay jiraan, haddana waxaa jiray rajo iyo go’aan adag oo ah in wax la beddelo.

U jeedkeeno waa: haweenka oo si joogto ah ugu lug yeesha soo tebinta wararka, sheekooyin dheelitiran, ilo warar kala duwan, iyo saxaafad ku saleysan karti iyo kalsooni — ee aan lagu xirin caadooyin h**e.
Mahad ballaaran ayaa u diraynaa IMS iyo dhammaan ka-qaybgalayaashii sida firfircoon uga qayb qaatay kulankan muhiimka ah.

📍KISMAAYO WORKSHOP UNDERWAY
Today in Kismaayo, SWJO — in partnership with IMS (International Media Support) — launched the next round of its national training series on Enhancing Gender Balance in Media Content.
Building on momentum from previous workshops in Mogadishu and Dhuusamareeb, this three-day training brings together journalists, producers, and anchors from local media outlets in Jubbaland.

From rethinking who gets to speak in news stories to challenging the newsroom norms that keep women out of field reporting, Day 1 set the tone for bold conversations and practical action.
We’re here to strengthen inclusive journalism where it matters — on the ground, across all regions.
