The Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO) welcomes the release of journalists Rowda Hassan Taakilo of Goobjoog Media and Shukri Caabi Cabdi of Shabeelle Media following their detention in Mogadishu.

While their release is a positive step, SWJO remains deeply concerned that three other media workers are still being detained:

Jacfar Mohamed Jimcaalle – Kalsan TV
Nuur Hassan Ali – Cameraman, Kalsan TV
Abdullahi Abdifatah Siidow – Cameraman, Shabeelle Media

SWJO calls on the Somali authorities to immediately release the remaining detained journalists and media workers, and to ensure their safety and legal rights are fully respected.

SWJO also expresses deep concern over the increasing cases of arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and harassment targeting journalists and media professionals in Somalia. These actions create fear within the media community and threaten press freedom and freedom of expression.

Journalists must be able to carry out their professional duties without fear of arrest, intimidation, or reprisals. Protecting media freedom is essential for accountability, democracy, and public access to information.

Tababarkii Garowe Wuu Soo Gabagaboobay!
Maanta waxaan ku soo xirnay tababarkii ugu dambeeyay ee taxanaha qaran ee Kobcinta Dheellitirnaanta Jinsiga ee Warbaahinta, oo SWJO iyo IMS (International Media Support) si wadajir ah ugu qabteen Garowe.Muddo saddex maalmood ah, suxufiyiinta, soo-saareyaasha, iyo tifaftirayaasha Puntland waxay si furan uga doodeen matalaadda dumarka, dhaqanka newsroom-ka, iyo sida go’aannada maalinlaha ahi u saameeyaan muuqaalka bulshada ee warbaahinta.

Ka qaybgalayaashu waxay barteen sida loo adeegsado Gender Tracking Tool-ka, waxayna tababareen hababka ka -hortagga eexda iyo xulashada ilo-wareedyo dheellitiran.
Waxa ugu weyn ee kasoo baxay ayaa ahaa kalsoonida iyo go'aanka ay muujiyeen ka qaybgalayaashu— in dheellitirnaanta jinsigu tahay tayada wanaagsan ee suxufinimada, ee aan kaliya ahayn arrin jinsi.
Guul ayu uku dhammaaday safarkii qaran.

Wrapping Up in Garowe!
Today we concluded the final workshop in our national series on Enhancing Gender Balance in Media Content, held here in Garowe in partnership with IMS (International Media Support)
Over three days, journalists, producers, editors, and presenters from Puntland engaged in open, honest conversations about representation, newsroom culture, and the everyday decisions that shape how Somali society is portrayed. Participants practiced using the Gender Tracking Tool, reflected on sourcing patterns, and explored practical steps to strengthen inclusive storytelling.

What stood out most was the commitment in the room — a shared understanding that balanced content isn’t just a gender issue, but a journalism issue. Garowe’s media professionals leave this workshop with actionable tools and renewed motivation to make their reporting more reflective, fair, and representative.
A strong finish to a national journey.

DAY 2 Garowe Gender Balance in Media Content Workshop. Our second day in Garowe has been full of energy, reflection, and practical learning as journalists from across Puntland continue strengthening their skills in producing more inclusive and gender-balanced media content.
Today’s sessions focused on:
•Examining common gaps in daily news production
•Practicing gender-sensitive storytelling techniques
•Exploring how newsroom routines shape representation
•Hands-on use of the SWJO Gender Tracking Tool to monitor and improve gender balance in media outputs. Participants engaged in open discussions about the realities of media representation in Puntland and the responsibility journalists carry in shaping public narratives. The commitment shown by editors, producers, and reporters today reflects a growing movement toward more equitable and responsible journalism in Somalia.

As we move into the final day tomorrow, we look forward to deeper conversations and shared solutions. Together, we are building a media landscape where every voice counts.

SWJO oo kaashanaysa IMS (International Media Support) ayaa maanta si rasmi ah uga daahfurtay tababarka kobcinta isku dheellitirka jinsiga ee wax soo saarka warbaahinta, kaas oo Garowe ka noqonaya qeybtii ugu dambeysay ee taxanaha tababar socday in muddo ah.
Kulanka maanta waxa uu ku bilowday falanqeyn dhab ah oo ku saabsan sida warbaahinta Puntland uga shaqeyn karto matalaad caddaalad ah oo ka turjumeysa bulshada oo dhan. Ka qaybgalayaashu waxay si furan uga hadleen dhaqanka newsroom-ka, qaabka xulashada ilo-warareedyadda, iyo sida go’aannada maalinlaha ahi u saameeyaan muuqaalka dumarka ee warbaahinta.

Muddo saddex maalmood ah, waxaan diiradda saari doonaa qalabyo wax-ku-ool ah, tusaalooyin dhabta newsroom-ka laga soo qaaday, iyo habab cusub oo lagu xoojinayo warbixin dheellitiran oo matasha bulshada Puntland ee kala duwan.
Bilow adag iyo tallaabo muhiim u ah warbaahin ka turjumta dhammaan bulshada.

Kicking Off in Garowe!
Today, SWJO in partnership with IMS launched the final edition of our national series on Enhancing Gender Balance in Media Content, bringing together journalists, producers, editors, and presenters from across Puntland.
Garowe’s media landscape carries its own unique strengths and challenges, and today’s discussions opened with an honest reflection on what inclusive journalism should look like in a rapidly evolving information environment. From newsroom culture to sourcing habits, participants began unpacking how everyday editorial decisions can either widen or close the gender gap.
Over the next three days, we will explore practical tools, real newsroom examples, and new ways of thinking that strengthen fair, balanced, and representative storytelling in Puntland.
A strong start — and an important step toward a more inclusive Somali media.
