U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Devin Kennington as the next U.S. ambassador to Somalia.

Kennington is a career U.S. Foreign Service officer with extensive experience in Africa. He previously served in Mogadishu as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Political-Military Affairs Counselor from 2023 to 2024. He has also served at U.S. diplomatic missions in Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil and Jamaica.

Following the recall of former ambassador Richard H. Riley, the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu was led by Chargé d’Affaires Justin Davis, who concluded his assignment in September 2026. Career diplomat Ruth Anne Stevens-Klitz has since taken over as Chargé d’Affaires while Kennington’s nomination awaits Senate confirmation.
