An unexpected reunion unfolded in Wau town today as Bol Agany, identified by witnesses as a former Anyanya I freedom fighter, returned to the area for the first time since 1971.

According to accounts from residents, Agany left his home in Aweil to join the Anyanya I movement in 1971 and had not been seen in his hometown since. He arrived in Wau this morning, 2026, but reportedly did not recognize members of his clan present at the scene.

Witnesses say Agany repeatedly asked for one individual: Elia Madut of Aweil. No other names or relatives were recalled by Agany at the time of his arrival.

Local elders in Wau are currently with Agany and are working to verify his identity and family connections. Community leaders are calling for anyone with information about Elia Madut, or with ties to the Agany family from Aweil, to come forward to assist.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement. The circumstances of Agany’s absence since 1971 remain unclear.

is a developing story. Details are based on eyewitness accounts and have not been independently verified.

β€ŽDear Mr. Ngong Bak Lual
β€Ž
β€ŽI am writing to express my strong condemnation of your recent post below on this attached photo regarding the construction of the Mayom Angok Payam office, which unfortunately misleads the community about Hon. Jacob Dau Kuol’s involvement. It is crucial to set the record straight: the Mayom Angokβ€š Jorbioch and Jaach Payam offices were built by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and are intended to serve as Traditional Courts Officesβ€š akin to those found in other areas like Ayat Great Traditional Courts and Gok Machar.
β€Ž
β€ŽYour depiction of Hon. Kuol as the driving force behind this project is not only erroneous but also undermines the real efforts of community members and organizations that contributed to its establishment. The communities of Mayom Angok Jaach and Jorbioch Payams have made it expressly clear that they prioritize the construction of Payam headquarters over Traditional Courtsβ€š wishing to retain traditional methods of governance under trees as has been customary.
β€Ž
β€ŽMoreoverβ€š it is disheartening to note that Hon. Kuolβ€š who represents us in the Ayat Constituency No. 9β€š has yet to demonstrate any meaningful contributions to Greater Majak Baai. His track record reveals a lack of engagement with the communityβ€š as he has not even convened a meeting to acknowledge and appreciate the trust placed in him by the electorate.
β€Ž
β€ŽWhile the installation of four mobile networks in parts of Greater Ayat Marial Baai is a step forwardβ€š it pales in comparison to the pressing needs of our community. We must ask ourselves: have we truly elected representatives who advocate for our best interestsβ€š or have we allowed self-serving individuals to lead us astray? Your post has unfortunately added to the confusion surrounding this matterβ€š and it is essential that we maintain transparency and accountability in our discussions regarding

MTN, Zain plan 90 site closures, seek tax relief, tariff hike

Mobile network operators MTN, Zain and Digitel to increase on-net and off-net tariffs by 43 percent next week as the companies grapple with rising operational costs, foreign currency shortages and a weakening South Sudanese pound.

The increase will push voice call rates from SSP 180 to SSP 260 per minute. The planned tariff hike comes as MTN and Zain planned to shut down a combined 90 network sites across the country. MTN has proposed closing 55 sites, while Zain plans to shut down 35 in an initial phase. Industry sources said additional sites could be affected if economic conditions continue to deteriorate.

The operators presented their concerns to the National Communication Authority, arguing that although they generate revenue in South Sudanese pounds, many critical expenses must be paid in U.S. dollars. These include international bandwidth, licenses, network equipment, spare parts and other services sourced from abroad.

Telecom companies also face rising fuel costs, with most network sites relying on diesel generators due to limited access to reliable electricity. The depreciation of the pound has further increased the cost of obtaining dollars needed to maintain operations, maintain network infrastructure and expand coverage.

Operators are seeking access to dollars at the official Bank of South Sudan exchange rate or tax exemptions on selected telecommunications imports from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and the South Sudan Revenue Authority. Sources said the proposed measures could help ease pressure on the sector and prevent further site closures.

The South Sudan National Communication Authority said it does not want operators to shut down network sites and is working to find ways for companies to continue operating within the country’s challenging economic environment. The regulator has engaged the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the Bank of South Sudan .
