Duluit Community Chairmanship Candidate Steps Down for Fellow Candidate

James Kuol Garang, a candidate for the chairmanship of the Duluit Bol Deng Community in Juba, has withdrawn from the race in favor of fellow candidate Jacob Bol Deng.

The decision followed an intervention by alumni of the Ethiopia Civil Service University, led by Dut Lual Anei, who sought to prevent divisions among their members.

During a meeting at Cairo Hotel in Juba, the alumni appealed for unity, brotherhood, and a peaceful leadership transition. James Kuol Garang agreed to step down, leaving Jacob Bol Deng as the sole candidate.

The alumni pledged continued support for both candidates and urged the Duluit Bol Deng Community to maintain unity and cooperation throughout the leadership transition.

The ceremony was attended by the Acting Commissioner of Aweil South County, the Deputy Chairperson of the State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, Hon. Gabriel Bol Dut, state directors general from the education, health, water, local government, and youth and sports ministries, the county education director, local authorities, chiefs, community members and the IRC field manager.

The handover marks another step in efforts to strengthen basic education, healthcare, water and sanitation services for communities in Aweil South County.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has handed over a newly constructed Primary Health Care Unit (PHCU) and two rehabilitated primary schools to authorities and communities in Nyieth Payam, Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

The facilities were supported by the World Bank under the ECRP II project. County and state officials thanked the IRC, World Bank and other partners, noting that the rehabilitation has restored two schools that had been non-operational for nearly 20 years and improved access to essential health and education services.

Drought Destroys Crops in Rumweel Boma, Aweil East County

A prolonged dry spell has severely affected crops in Rumweel Boma of Malual Baai Payam, Aweil East County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, after the area reportedly went for three months without rainfall.

Paramount Chief Yel Yel of Rumweel has appealed to the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State government and South Sudanese communities in the diaspora to provide urgent assistance to households whose crops have been destroyed by the drought.

Chief Yel Yel said the situation is unprecedented in the area, noting that residents have not experienced such severe drought conditions in his lifetime.

He also urged the State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to treat the situation as an emergency, warning that many families have limited alternative sources of food and livelihood.

The drought has raised concerns over worsening food insecurity and a possible food crisis in Aweil East County and other counties across Northern Bahr el Ghazal State if urgent interventions are not taken.

Local authorities and humanitarian partners are being urged to assess the impact of the drought and provide immediate support to affected communities.
