Bentiu government suspends 26 Head Teachers over protest links

The Ministry of General Education and Instruction in Unity State has suspended 26 headteachers and several other teaching staff from various schools.

The move comes after a mass protest staged in Bentiu, where students, many from IDP and PoC camps, some as young as eight and above took to the streets demanding the release of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chuol, and six others, while also calling for all charges against them to be dropped.

According to authorities, the suspended educators are accused of having ties to the protest.

Al Jazeera is reporting from Jordan because it has been banned in Israel and the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has released a statement saying the amendments Hamas wants to add to this latest proposal are unacceptable to Israel. Nonetheless, the Israelis would still be sending a delegation to the Qatari capital, Doha, on Sunday to meet those negotiators to try to bridge the gaps between both sides.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu is headed to Washington to meet US President Donald Trump to talk about this very issue.

There’s been a lot of pressure on Netanyahu, both domestic and international. On the domestic front, you have family members of Israeli captives who have been protesting for nearly 650 days.

And in the political arena, you have his right-wing coalition partners not wanting a deal and wanting assurances from Netanyahu that the war is not actually going to end.

However, there have been some reports of flexibility from the Israeli prime minister. A lot of different reports within Israeli media are citing the fact that Netanyahu is finally showing this willingness, and that’s because of the international pressure from European allies and US President Donald Trump, with whom he is going to sit down and discuss this issue.

Unity State health official warns of possible suspension of services in Panyjiar

The Director General in the Ministry of Health in Unity State, John Mut, has warned that health services in Panyjiar County could be suspended following the rejection of a newly appointed County Health Director (CHD).

Mr. Peter Yoah was recently appointed as CHD by Governor Riek Bim Top, but his appointment was rejected by both the Panyjiar County Commissioner and the SPLM-IO health secretariat, who continue to back the former CHD, Mr. Bany Makon.

In a statement, the Director General warned that without an officially recognized focal person, health operations in the county could come to a standstill.

“The health services in Panyjiar County will halt immediately if the county and SPLM-IO authorities continue to endorse the former CHD and reject the one appointed by the state government,” he said, stressing that the Health System Transformation Program (HSTP) is a government-led initiative that requires coordination with legitimate state-appointed officials.

NEW MUNDRI EAST COUNTY COMMISSIONER SWORN IN

John Henry Ngalamu was sworn in Friday as the new commissioner of Mundri East County in a ceremony led by Western Equatoria State’s acting Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa.

The appointment comes as Mundri East faces prolonged insecurity and displacement, with officials and residents urging reconciliation.

Acting Governor Rimbasa tasked Ngalamu with uniting divided communities and working closely with youth, women and traditional leaders in conflict-hit areas like Minga and Rokon.

“The people of Mundri need peace now more than ever,” Rimbasa said. “You must go immediately, serve all groups equally and prioritize unity.”

Ezo County Commissioner Abel Sudan, speaking on behalf of fellow commissioners at the swearing-in ceremony in Yambio, praised Ngalamu’s selection as a “wise choice for peace and service delivery.”

Silvestor Juma Tanga, a Mundri East representative, thanked President Salva Kiir for the appointment but stressed the need for Ngalamu to address divisions beyond the county’s borders.

Jeslina Pitia Benson, a Member of Parliament representing Mundri East, said the appointment could strengthen legislative collaboration, particularly in addressing displacement in Minga and Rokon.

Alfred Kunji, a local resident, expressed cautious optimism, urging Ngalamu to “focus on reconciliation.” Women’s leader Verse Sura called for communal support, saying, “Lasting peace requires all of us to work together.”

Ngalamu’s Pledge

Ngalamu, appointed by President Salva Kiir on May 21, succeeds Margaret Fozia Emmanuel.

A member of the ruling SPLM party, Ngalamu vowed to “deliver services, restore peace and ensure stability” but faces significant challenges in an area weary of conflict.
