Message to My Community

Some people in our community and beyond are saying that Kur Lual betrayed us by defending Dr. Riek Machar in court. I want to make it very clear: Ustaz Kur Lual, as a lawyer, has the full legal and professional right to defend any individual, whether from the government side or the opposition. There is no crime in that. He is simply carrying out his duty and mandate as a lawyer.

We, the people of Upper Nile State—especially in the northern counties of Renk, Melut, and Akoka—were deeply victimized during the 2013–2016 conflict under the leadership of Dr. Riek Machar. I personally stand with the government and want Dr. Riek Machar to answer for the atrocities and crimes he committed during the Nasir war. However, this does not give us the right to condemn or attack someone like Kur Lual, who is only fulfilling his professional responsibility.

Justice demands that every accused person must have the right to legal defense, whether we agree with them or not. Let us give Kur Lual his peace, his dignity, and his personal rights.

The Ministry has weakened its case at prima facie by quoting wrong sections of the law (Penal Code Act, 2008). S. 186 doesn't deal with crimes against humanity(attacks against civilians) but rather deals with ‘Fouling Water of Public Well or Reservoir.’ S. 334 also deals with house breaking by night. This is pathetic.

One would say, this case is partly dead on arrival. Warning: avoid using AI to draft charges
