Vice President James Wani Igga has directed the Ministry of Mining to ensure all companies operating in South Sudan’s mining sector comply with national laws and regulations.

Igga, who chairs the Economic Cluster, also stressed that mining activities must benefit the people of South Sudan.

He made the remarks on Monday in Juba after receiving a briefing from Mining Minister Losuba Ludoru Wongo and his delegation.

The briefing covered plans to conduct geological surveys to determine the country’s mineral potential across all states, as well as updates on exploration processes for companies seeking to invest in the sector.

The ministry also briefed the Vice President on challenges facing the mining industry.

According to the ministry, Shamrock Company is among the major firms seeking to invest in South Sudan’s mining sector.

The company has reportedly agreed to construct three major roads and establish a gold refinery to add value to minerals extracted in the country.

Vice President Igga reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting responsible investment in the mining sector, saying mining activities should contribute to economic stabilization.

The government has been seeking to expand mining activities while strengthening regulation and ensuring the sector contributes more to national development

QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The most important challenge is political. Who do I serve: an individual or the country? If I have a contract of 15 million dollars, who do I give that to? Is that say, a NilePet Insurance Company or other briefcase company? If I don't give it to Nilepet Insurance, then a powerful individual with a briefcase company is on my neck. How do I deal with such challenges? These are the challenges I continue to face. Yet, I know there are 3.45 million people who died to liberate this country. Their bones are lying on our rivers, on mountains, and in graves that are marked and graves that are not marked. These are the people who formed my decision, the mothers. Some people here are working with wounds. Psychological wounds, physical wounds, these are freedom fighters. If I decide in favor of an individual, then I am not a patriot. I must make a decision to build our critical institutions. If you come to give me advice, I will listen to you. I will listen to your counsel. But I will assess the validity of your advice, I will assess the practicality of your advice, and I will assess the consequences of your advice. This and many others will form the decision that I make. And if you threaten me, that will not make me decide in your favor. Because, compared to many millions of people who have died for this country, my blood doesn't come close to that. So, no amount of threat or psychological intimidation will make me decide in favor of a particular individual, and we must work together to ensure that our institutions are functioning, " said Santino Ayuel Longar, Undersecretary, Ministry of Petroleum.
