Bodyguard of First Vice President Machar died in Jamus military custody in Juba.

The reported death of Lt. Col Luka Gathok Nyuon Reat, a close bodyguard of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, while in military custody raises serious concerns about the treatment of detainees and the broader political tensions in South Sudan.

Lt. Col Luka Gathok Nyuon Reat, detained at Tiger Division prison for six months, reportedly died shortly on Thursday after being placed under house arrest.

The cause of death remains unclear, though allegations of torture at Jamus military cell have surfaced.

Family members have confirmed the death to Bilpam Radio, adding weight to the report.

His death comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the pending trials of senior SPLM-IO members, including Dr. Machar himself.

This incident could further strain the fragile peace arrangements and deepen mistrust between SPLM-IO and government forces.

If torture is confirmed, this would constitute a grave violation of international human rights standards.

The lack of transparency and accountability in military detention facilities has long been a concern in South Sudan.

Confirmed Attack in Nasir County:

At approximately 1:00 AM local time, aerial bombardments struck Maker Kun-Thoal and Jikmiir payams in Nasir County, Upper Nile State. Investigations confirm the use of ethyl acetate, a highly flammable chemical compound, not traditional cluster bombs.
This chemical triggered intense fires, causing severe burns.

Casualties: The number of casualties remains unknown, but several others are injured and displaced to Ethiopia as refugees.

Source of Chemicals: Containers found at the site reportedly bear the logo of Laxmi Organic Industries Ltd., an Indian chemical exporter. Uganda, a known importer of such chemicals, is being scrutinized for possible supply links.

Community Tensions:
While official investigations are ongoing, local accusations are surfacing against Jacob Dollar Ruot, a politician from the Gaguang community, allegedly seeking favor with Vice President Bol Mel.

This atrocity is a blatant breach of international law and a moral outrage. The use of chemical weapons is prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention and condemned by all civilized nations. Human rights defenders demand an immediate investigation by international bodies, including the UN and OPCW, and urgent humanitarian access to the affected areas.

The whole world should know that Dr.Machar’s executives are on death row. It’s not detention/prison, it’s hell, it’s a death or alive scenario.

On Saturday, 64 men reached the small Canary island of El Hierro aboard a wooden boat after leaving Mauritania about four days earlier.
